I grew up with them, heard Boy when it first came out, saw them in a little theater in '82.

Bono is pretty self-deprecating actually.

Indeed he can:

"Recovery has been more difficult than I thought. As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor western civilisation are depending on this."

Never seen a video... never seen them live...

I own their first 3 albums. Heard some other songs on the radio that I haven't paid much attention to. That's about it

Bummer, for Bono, or anyone who loves to play.
Bono has always been a generous, principled guy.
I hope he can "work through" the problem, or learns to cope.
There's two lessons here.
One, don't take your ability to express yourself for granted, and two, be gracious when
your good fortune changes.

Neil Young is another hand injury survivor, having hurt his hand badly while cutting
a sandwich a few years ago.

He may be surprised once he heals. My college roommate, Scott Colby was a great slide guitar player. A number of years ago he injured his arm in a fall and was told that he would never again play guitar. He was at a music awards event with a friend of his, (Henry Kaiser) and they actually had dinner with Sonny Landreth (and the CEO of Rickenbacker guitars). After dinner (and a show) they all went back to Sonny's room to jam. When Sonny heard Scott's story, he asked him if he had even tried to play. When Scott replied "no", Sonny handed him his guitar and said "play!"... and he did!

Which arm is it, fretting or strumming? It could make the difference.

It seems it was his left (fretting) hand. Titanium elbow with screws and then further surgery on his hand.

BBC News:
"U2 frontman Bono broke his arm in six places and fractured his eye socket, hand and shoulder blade in his recent bicycle accident in New York"

I heard the story yesterday - mind you it was only one of those quick sound blurbs on the radio at the top of the hour.

It quoted him that due to the accident he had a titanium elbow and could not play any more. I was struck that my pop had a replacement knee and that he can actually do a lot more now than before. Perhaps Bono's injuries were far worse and require more therapy to recover.

At any rate, hopefully he can find the right physical therapy and treatment to get his function back.

Frankly I can't stand the bloke myself, but that's a bloody rotten thing to happen to anyone and particularly a professional musician. I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. It's also true, as someone already pointed out and as I can testify from personal experience of an admittedly much more minor nature, that playing guitar or any musical instrument can be excellent therapy in rehabilitation following a severe hand injury.
