I dislike the personal internet fueled hate rained down on certain people playing music just because you don't like their music. I saw U2 in a Belfast leisure centre back in the 'Boy' days and the sum of their parts was electrifying. Later stuff isn't so much to my taste. I don't much care if any particular genre of music isn't your bag,but it's only human to wish the guy the best of recoveries.

boy is a great album...love early U2...i like their later stuff too

I grew up with them, heard Boy when it first came out, saw them in a little theater in '82.

Bono is pretty self-deprecating actually.

The Cadillac Green axe always killed me because it reminded me of the real '57 one I had that I sold for a $100 profit (bought it for $400 and sold it for $500...:()

Drag he can't play but never say never. Look at Les Paul !

As someone mentioned earlier, he has a pretty good sense of humor about it. I hope he recovers better than anticipated.
I can't help but think of Tony Iommi or Django Reinhardt or the many others who have adapted their playing to accommodate injury.
I think he did a lot of that 'big-strum' background stuff. Maybe a new direction for his playing would bring a new direction for the band.
They have changed a lot in the past 38 years.

No Django just taught himself to play with what he had left working he ripped it up too. One of the best, ever.

I didn't read the whole article but I didn't see him saying he'd been advised by a physician he'll "likely" not play again.

"As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again." Pretty ambiguous.

Lots of guitar players have had to come back from serious hand injuries including Tom Petty, Paul Westerberg,Jack White and Mike Ness to name a few.

Django played from age 12. His injury came later and was key to the development of his unique style. Prior to that he was accomplished at working within the styles of his contemporaries. He was already making a living as a musician.
Anyhow, point is limitations often spark a creative response. Time for Bono to learn finger-style playing :)

Eddie Vedder is another that started out not playing but picked it up. Even Rod Stewart has played an instrument on a recording...probably not for 40 years with Faces, but still...Rod Stewart.

All the best to Bono, love him or hate him.

The fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand were severly burnt in a fire when he was 18.

He was playing the banjo before age twelve, but you're right, people play the guitar with their feet. With one arm, guitars with one string...I meant only that he had to learn to play using a damaged hand.
