Around five years ago I recorded my still not released yet solo album "The return to Blueberry hill" and in between those sessions, did this version of "Overkill" you're listening to now but decided not to put it on the album after the sessions were over because my own songs should be the focal point of the album.

I played everything apart from the drums which were done by Maarten Driessen of the Reggae band Povereign, who also was the producer here. I later re-mastered the song, did a new vocal track because let's be honest, singing like Colin Hay does is TOUGH and I simply couldn't go as high as he does without going off or losing power in the delivery. Although I did keep the high pitched vocals in the background as to add texture to the already paranoid nature of the lyrics. They are audible in the final verse.

The pictures come from my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan comic "A Weird world" which is a crossover story of the 2012 and the 2018 series. The pictures show Hun of the Purple Dragons who after stealing Shredder's gauntlets and declaring himself the new Shredder, got Tiger Claw's foot bots on on his tail. But as Donatello opens a dimensional portal, for the 2018 Donatello and April to return home, Hun just happens to see that portal too, and with it he sees a way out and he takes it with two very willing hands. Again fitting in very well with the topic of the song.

Nice cover! Man, Colin Hay has such a range, it's dang near impossible to pull it off like he does--especially in the repeat of the first verse after the break. And he can still hit those notes after all these years!

I wish I could sing halfway decently so I could cover a few of his songs. His recent stuff is superb.

Wanna learn how to play this tune? Look:

The first two chords are the same concept as Hold On Loosely by 38 Special.

That is a great video, and he has adapted it beautifully to acoustic guitar. I had trouble trying to move my pointer finger down one note while holding the rest with my other fingers... it's all in the way your position your wrist.

Try keeping your elbow away from your side and elevate the headstock a few inches.

We had tix to see Colin play here in Annapolis the first week in April and the show was canx'd :(

He's one of our best singer/songwriters today.

Here's one of his more recent tunes; the chords and arrangement are incredible. It just may be his best song yet.

He just keeps getting better.

Do you perform this as "young" Elvis or "fat Las Vegas" Elvis?.......just joking.
Yeah, singing Colin Hay material is tough. There's a documentary on him on Netflix or Amazon Prime that is VERY interesting. Nowadays, he mostly performs solo in smaller clubs and theaters.....and MAN!....he's still got "IT". The video touches on the controversy of Down Under and Gregg Ham. Sad situation, and Colin is still bitter.

Nah, I was channeling my inner David Bowie.

My producer said that my singing voice would only fit Dire Straits songs or later Iggy Pop material.

David Byrne.

And hey what can I do, I'm Dutch, I speak English fluently but people can still hear that it isn't my native language.

One day, Blazer, I hope you can tell us your story. I always thought you were an American guy living in the NL.

Aye that's him, Yeah I have a few Dutch friends who are bilingual. Sometimes humour or sarcasm gets lost in the translations I think ...I've not been over for a few years now, but hopefully I can plan a trip to Assen for the MotoGP once all this bug nonsense has gone from our lives..

I stumbled across this very video recently, I've seen it a dozen times. A new favorite.

A few years ago I bought myself Men at Work's "Cargo" album and I found a song which I think has got to be among Colin's best ever.

And when you listen to the live version, even more so.

I used to own one of those Yamaha SG models, it was a cool guitar but it weighed too much.
