Not sure which forum this belongs in so I'll try here!

I have a few guitar stands, some with rubber, some with foam. Ive been told neither will play well with a nitro finish.

So my question is what kind of guitar stand covering wont react with a nitro finish?

Man, those inexpensive stands with the latex tubing on them will eat nitro lacquer. I had it happen to my first 57 reissue Strat back in the 90s. It was ugly.

that was when I wanted my guitars out all the time (once I had kids I moved the guitars to their cases). But my workaround was putting old thick socks over the rubber on the stands. It looked stupid, but it worked.

I wouldn’t trust any long term contact with nitro—no matter what the stand manufacturer says. I’ve had straps and cords discolor finish just from general use, not long term storage against the guitar.

just my 2¢.

I have used Hercules stands. Never had an issue myself. I have a Rickenbacker on one (which is no help here, since that is a Conversion Varnish finish), and an old (late 1930s) archtop on the other. To be fair, I don't know for certain what the finish on that instrument is, since it is a rather cheap laminated-top example with painted maple flame effect on the back and sides, but I can't imagine what else it is likely to be at that time. That instrument has been on the stand - apart from when it is being played - pretty much constantly for the past four or so years.

Find a friend with a sewing machine, bring them all-cotton thick cloth like old jeans, to make into 'socks' that fit over the stand/hanger fingers. Sew them one side, turn inside out, and they will look finished, not like old ratty tube socks dangling from the hangers. It's pretty quick if they have a sewing machine. You could sew them by hand otherwise.

Here is a random example, just change the size and delete the drawstring

Another random example, long narrow strips sewed and turned inside out. Start at 3 minutes in. I've seen his videos before, he'll say it's "cloth welding" for guys.

What kind of crappy nitro finishes are you guys dealing with? I finished this about a year ago, threw it on my hanger the day after I finished it..

Not a mark on it..

The body I shot with Daphne blue nitro, I have no doubt it would hold up just as well.

I had someone sew non bleached muslin on mine. But I am thinking about getting some new stands. These are few years old now and these Les Pauls are heavy. I can see them giving away sometime. Not a chance I want to take

The neck on my AV 72 was so sticky when I got it, I could have used it to pick up beer cans along side the road. I kept putting fast fret on it for what seemed like forever until it finally quit being sticky, and hardened up too. Now it just seems normal, but I put those pieces of sock on the stand it sets on, and it never made a blemish on either the body or neck.

I use Hercules, but out of an abundance of caution cut pieces of colored felt and taped them where the guitar may touch the rubber. Inconspicuous and cheap peace of mind.

+1 for Hercules - both stands and wall hangers. They are now advertising safe for nitro. I have several of both kinds and no issues with nitro staining.

I just bought one a couple of hours ago. I think I'll get one more. I'm getting them for my Les Pauls. I've been using the On Stage generic stands for years. They aren't bad but as heavy as a Les Paul can be, mine are in the 10 pound neighborhood, I can see the bottom arm bending or breaking over time . And yeah, we know how that works out when your LP face plants

I use Hercules, but only as stage stands at gigs. My guitars (all of them) live in their cases.

I think Hercules was the first one that I saw who specifically stated would not harm any finishes...including nitro. I purchased both the 7 instrument stand and some hangers....7 years old and no damage thus far.

It’s been decades since I owned a ten-speed, but how about cork handlebar tape?

I have this model:

https://www.guitarcenter.com/Proline/PLMS5-5-Guitar-Folding-Stand.gc

What what worked for me is I took generic black tube socks that are on the thicker side and cut the ends off and slid them through the 2 bottom bars that support the body of the guitar.

I have one of those too. In over 10 years of use it hasn't damaged the nitro finishes of my Martin J18, my Gibson LP or several "home builds".

No socks required.

I also have a few "On Stage Stands" that have never damaged nitro finishes.
