And, if so, what was your experience?
Looking around online, it seems that there are a number of opinions regarding this question: Those who believe that knockoff Chibson guitars are the work of the devil and only evil, irredeemable, reprehensible people buy or own them; those who think they're OK, so long as you understand that they're low quality and you don't have high expectations about what you're buying; those who see them as OK, especially as a basis for an upgrade project; and, those who think that they're just fine to buy, so long as they're not misrepresented as the real thing in any kind of subsequent sale.
My question does not go to the first or last of those opinions. I am more interested in the items themselves. They look good and many folks seem to think the quality has improved over the last few years. Some even suggest that they're good enough that the manufacturers should start putting a brand on them and selling them under their own name.
Have you ever played, bought, or owned one of these? If so, what did/do you think about it?
Again, I hope this doesn't become a discussion of the evils of counterfeiting. Clearly, counterfeiting and stealing another company's trademarks and designs is wrong. That is not what I'm asking about here.
I'm asking about the items themselves. Are they any good? Or, are they more akin to art that you hang on the wall, because they're awful and they'll never be playable, at least not unless you put the cost of a real one into it to make it better?
And, this question isn't limited to fake Gibsons. Those sellers offer pretty much every brand and model imaginable. I assume that the quality is fairly consistent, whether for good or ill. Is this correct, as well?
(The reason for this thread: I find myself being drawn to a Chinese EB-3 knockoff. I want a short scale EB-3, but I don't really need it and it's not going to get a lot of use. I just want it. So, over a grand for Gibson is silly. But, $200 bucks for a fake? It might scratch the itch, if you know what I mean.)
