I never even use the middle position. Does anyone sell a control plate that just has a regular 2 position metal toggle switch? For that matter I never use the tone control either. I guess at this point i just need to get a blank plate and drill my own holes. How about them apples? How about a tele with one switch to change between pickups, and one knob, for volume? Where can I get a blank tele plate?

There's not even any google results for 2 position telecaster switch. People want 4 position. 5 position. 6 position. No one even wants to sell me less telecaster for money. How about them apples?

Anyone who knows a bit about wiring have any thoughts about a good way to go about such a simple scheme?

Welcome, Mr. Adams. I've read all of your books. Let me first of all congratulate you on your supermodel girlfriend. You are an inspiration to average looking middle-aged men the world over. I can tell your question is one of your social experiments that you love to blog about. So let me just say I applaud your efforts.

I can neither confirm nor deny allegations concerning either the existence or nonexistence of supermodel girlfriends or the possession or lack of an inspirational gift and/or any other positive personal characteristics and/or the possession or lack of any personal character whatsoever.

Sometimes an unintended consequence of using these types of switches that have an off position in the middle is that you get "break before make" switching where one signal completely shuts off before another turns on which can cause audible pops. The normal blade and toggle switches used in guitars are "make before break" so as you switch from one position to the next there is a point where both contacts/pickups are active before one shuts off. This is what ultimately led to 5-way switches on Strats, when players filed notches in their 3 way switches at the points where the neck/middle and middle/bridge combinations were both active.

For the OP, a Gibson style 3 way switch is very easy to live with even if you never use the middle position because it's so easy to just knock it all the way up or down due to its short throw.

Why don't you just do two volume controls? One for each pickup. No switch or tone control.

Then you could blend them or have just one on at a time.
