Saw the thread about "painting a fretboard" and got me thinking about a question I've had since I saw this creation by Yuriy.
The neck is painted and has inlays/side markers. How do you figure Yuriy did this? My thought... fret the neck, carve out inlay/side marker recesses, apply colour, clean up recesses, place inlays and side markers, apply clear coat then clean frets with blade. All in that order. Wouldn't this method leave the side markers and inlays a bit recessed from the lack of layers of paint? What do you think?

Goes without saying since the guitar is a master build that I'm looking for insight into the way that would yield high, custom shop quality results as opposed to the easiest way. Sometimes they are one and the same. Not always.

Personally, I do not like the way this cream looks. And it’ll get a hell of a lot worse ten years down the line, I bet. But it’s a really interesting process. It seems easier to do the inlay recesses before fretting. And as far as the inlays being recessed, you could plan for them to be a hair proud, or level the clear coat with a bunch of layers and sanding... god do I hate that cream... the gold looks nice.

I really like the vintage white closet classic finish. You can't really see it but it has that slightly aged/checking to it.

Level and sanding makes sense. With a radius block all the way up the neck. Frets would need to be off. I've heard of the frets going on after the clear coat... not sure how thats done. Clean out the fret slot after every coat?

How do you figure the finish will wear in an ugly way? Discoloration? Fretboard wear?
