Looking to pick up a Fender Jaguar to set up primarily for slide playing.

Wondering if
  1. I should go for a Classic Player since it is mostly for slide anyway (read: get it, set it up, and just play it; else goto #2)
  2. go for the 60s Jaguar for more authenticity (from the school of - if I am going to be keeping the stock pickups why not; else goto #3)
  3. go for a Special HH and swap out the pickups for SD PhatCats (had the 'Cats in a Newport and loved them, no idea how they would sound in a Jag; else goto #4)
  4. Something else
Don't want to spend over $1k on yet another guitar and use my Tele in standard tuning to much to commit that guitar for slide, but it sure would be nice to have something tuned for slide sitting on a stand to just grab and go at it. As it is, I was at first thinking of a Mustang, but eventually worked my way up to the 'stang.

Comments, opinions, thoughts . . .

Thx.

I like the offset, the funky & eccentric switches, etc. of the Jag. As for the trem, like most do with a Strat for slide, immediately lock that baby down.

I wouldn't use that bridge/trem system for slide. It's not the friendliest trem system.

What about the Squier Affinity Jazzmasters that sell for $199? If you just want an offset for slide get one of these with a fixed bridge....

I had a '62 Jaguar and I would not use it for slide. Besides, why not use the guitar you play now?
I used to buy into that BS about a dedicated slide guitar, but after I got good at slide, my low action guitars work just fine. The light touch I have makes for a much better slide sound and I can play any guitar with a slide.
If you are just looking for a reason to buy another guitar...then...go for it. Heck, my brother bought a Les Paul, so I (of course) had to get one.

That is not a Jag.

It's an affordable offset that would make a nice slide guitar (that was my point). He said that he likes offsets.
I know- all the cool funkiness/problems inherent of Jags are missing. It could just as well be any double HB guitar.

I play slide a bit on my jag.(60s mij model)

It's the classic jaguar configuration,
Makes for a unique and interesting slide sound.
Mine is set up normally, with the functioning trem and rocking bridge-
No real issues, other than it being a bit more finicky to set up.

Maybe for slide you might try locking the trem down and wrapping the bridge posts with tape or shrink tube or something to lock it in place.

For me going with any other configuration than the classic jaguar defeats the purpose, unless it's just the body shape you like.

But I have a lot of guitars and can slide on them all tho-
If I was to have only one dedicated slide guitar it probably wouldn't be the jag.

Any guitar can be used to play slide.
Some hardware on certain models may make it harder for some people to play slide, others learn to adapt if they can.
If you can do it, great. If not, try something else. You'll never know if you can or can't til you try.

Everyone who's scared of the jaguar vibrato is wrong. They're easier to set up than a strat, sound great and don't move till you grab the bar.

If I was buying a jag I'd get either the MIM 60s or the Johnny Marr. And MIJ won't be good for regular playing but the neck might be a bit small for slide.

Love the marr jag and great switching options but hard to get at under 1k. Easy to get at 1200 or so.

MIM 60's or CP. I suspect that that a MIM with a Mustang or Staytrem bridge would be a good option.

Also consider the Cobain Jaguar which was - apparently - built as a slide guitar before Curt got it.

I only play slide on electrics, and I like P90 pickups best overall, followed by low output (Gretsch style) humbuckers. Also I wouldn't have anything that didn't have adjustable pole pieces - humbuckers, P90s or plastic bobbin alnico Strat SCs. I don't know whether the poles on Jag pickups can be moved.

Played the Jags and Jazzmasters. But yeah, been checking out the Mustang past couple days, too. Played both the 90 & standard. Now I am thinking a Mustang would be sufficient. It's so tuff cause I want a rosewood board but was looking for the 'stat' style pickups. I did like the P90s w rosewood board though. However, at this point I am leaning towards the standard 'stang figuring since it's for slide anyway, the maple board really doesn't matter. And it IS a relatively inexpensive investment. Seems even used stuff closer to what I want is tuff to find for that dollar. Ideally, I would come across a white Mustang with a tortoise shell guard, strat style p/u, 3-way switch. Either hard-tail or I would lock down mod.

What was it Johnny winter used on his first album?
Was a mustang or duo Sonic wasn't it?
I have a bronco with a strat pickup in it that slides ok.
Again, a trem guitar.

Bingo, we have a winner.

It was a white Mustang with a tortoise shell guard customized without slide-switches & added 3-way switch, + hardtail, rosewood board.

That would be pretty much what I am looking for.
