Prog rock anyone

I grew up greatly appreciating prog/rock bands. In the vein of: Focus, Rush, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, UK, Genesis (early years), Frank Zappa, Dream Theatre, etc. I find it inspirational stuff to practice guitar.

I was curious if there are any current progressive bands still recording/performing? I listen to The Flower Kings and Umphrey's McGee yet always searching for more prog rock!

check out dopapod. i saw them open for umphrey's 2 yrs ago in philly, and they were great, with a distinct progressive vibe. their most recent record is a good listen.

Anyway, when I was a teen Yes was my favourite band. Whenever I listen to Prog Rock it takes me back, but I can't seem to listen to it without that nostalgia factor creeping in. Looking back, the genre can be self indulgent.

I'm partial to GYBE! (really so-called post rock) and the ol' "krautrock", in addition to the 'classic' prog rock stuff. I don't think the term 'prog rock' functions well as a genre type either...*shrugs*

The style certainly risks mind-numbing self-indulgence. Yet, some remarkable melodic phrasing can be captured playing outside the box. A steady diet maybe not, but I always find time for some prog rock (Yes, a weak label for the genre).

I like IQ. They are actually from the 1980s but they are still releasing albums. Lots of melodic guitar and vocals and Genesis-like keyboards.

They tried going pop a bit with their "Nomzamo" and "Are You Sitting Comfortably" albums, but even those albums have some gems.

this latest is very Crimson esque also check out White Denim, at times they remind me of Yes with a modern, looser attitude

Prog used to be my main course, dessert, all my food groups rolled into one.

Now I like it as a sorbet. A little Faces, a little Buck, then - CAN.

And let me go on record as saying yes - I DID waste a lot of years when I was young venturing out from the big groups like Yes, Crimson, Moody Blues, Genesis, to try and find some of the outliers that were worthy (Gentle Giant ? No, I'm sorry...) when I could have been listening to CAN and Neu!

CAN was like a tribe who had looked over the next hill into the future, while Genesis were the luddites who had just discovered fire...

For me---(as a fossil,lol) most anything up to around '75.
Genesis,Yes,King Crimson (first 2 albums),Gentle Giant,ELP,and Flash.
To me,the older original prog bands were complex,but organic---a lot of newer prog bands seem focused on technique/complexity,and to me sound rather stiff and clinical.Incredible musicians as they are,I cannot listen to more than one Dream Theater tune.Selling England By The Pound by Genesis is wild,but very musical.

It's the first time hearing the track - yet, the odd meter and fragmented structure of the arrangement would lend itself to be rightly considered prog rock. It's good material.
