Went to see this with the wife last night. Meryl Streep did a credible job of playing her parts with the usual Hollywood stereotyping. But according to what I'd read after she did all her own guitar work. Cried to her she plays probably better than I do. She does play a Tele in the flic. Rick Springfield is there to on an SG and a Dano.
Any thoughts from here?

I love movies about music/musicians. Whatever you may think of RS, you know he's a musician, instead of just an actor miming with a prop (and yeah he probably WAS miming during the actual filming, but he could play if he wanted)

I just picked this up on dvd. I'm with dannew02 in that I will always have some interest in a musician/band themed movie. The plot, etc. was weak but I did really enjoy watching the band. (Probably a little nostalgia for when I used to play, heh).

Anyone care to comment on whether they portrayed a typical americana bar band accurately? They seemed just a touch too polished to me.

In the credits it said music performed by Ricki and the Flash so I guess the whole band are the real deal which is impressive.

Any other movies that portray bands accurately? I would nominate Dogs in Space for undeground music. Pretty much bang on.

I finally caught Ricky and the Flash on Netflix streaming. Surprisingly disappointing. The script was not up to Meryl's potential.

Perhaps when it becomes available on DVD, there will be some deleted scenes or other insightful commentary or interviews
that might explain some of the loose threads. It won't necessarily turn this into a great movie, though. FWIW, I sort of enjoyed it, but I like Streep. Haven't seen Mamma Mia, though...

Yes it was. Rick Springfield was the only bright spot in the movie.

This.
While I have respect for Streep as an actor and Springfield as a musician, the script doctors have no idea how a bar band works.
Or a bar.

See Freaky Friday for something closer to reality.
Or Anvil, The Story of Anvil.
Or School of Rock.
Or This is Spinal Tap.
Much real-er...
