Hey all,
I've got a guitar, that had originally came with a soapbar p90s. The previous owner had routed the guitar for humbuckers. I've learnt over the years, I like single coils best. So I got a p90 for a les paul jr build I'll one day do. But in the meantime I thought why not try and make it work in this guitar. The dimensions of the existing route are 1 5/8" wide x 3 3/8" long x 3/4" deep.
I'm not very educated in the various styles of p90 mountings. The one I bought (used) came with soap bar and a dogear cover. The p90 seems to have the "basket" mount attached to the bottom.
Im wondering if that has to stay on? Or can it come off so that I could mount the p90 into the guitar wood. (Likely will have to shim the pickup to get the proper height).
Any experts willing to shed some light on the situation?
Im not worried about the slight gaps on the widths of the pickups - I'd rather have the guitar sound how I like better then a little cosmetic flaw. I am thinking it is do able to put a p90 in here, because at one time there was one in it.
Thanks

The baseplate helps holds the magnets and bobbin in place and can provide a ground for braided wire. P90's are either held down with the two screws like the diagram above shows, or by one smaller screw in each dogear if that cover is used.

There are P90 base plates for both dog ear and soap bar styles. The soap bar base plate does not have the metal ears that extend out from the ends of the pickup, kind of like a Humbucker mount. If you're going to use dogear covers, you might have to remove some wood. It won't fit in a humbucker cavity.
As Marty says above, the baseplate is not just a mounting bracket, it's a functional part of the pickup, so you need one of the two styles of base plates, you cannot remove it, but you can change it.

BTW, here's a shot of a Tele I built that I put an inset P-90 in the neck position. Dog-ears are of course, supposed to be surface mounted, but you can put a layer of foam underneath it, so you can raise and lower the pickup as needed. It came out better than I thought it would.

Looks great! Are the screws on the side into the wood beside the route then?
Where'd you get that bridge?

Thank you. The guitar was built for a charity auction, for Atlanta Lab(rador Retriever) Rescue, so I wanted to make it all black, and be as "doggy" as possible. It had black dog whisker strings and tennis ball half knobs, and a bone-shaped, bone inlay at the 12th fret and back cover plate. That's why Brian remembered it as the "Labrocaster."

Yes on your question about the screws. There's a piece of black foam, medium density, under the pickup, and the pickup overall height is regulated by screwing the dog ear screws in and out. (Not too far in, though, unless you need your belly scratched! :D)

I don't remember exactly which bridge I used, but I wanted all black, with individual string intonation adjustments, so it was probably this one: http://www.guitarfetish.com/Vintage-Style-6-Saddle-Tele-Bridge-Black-on-Black_p_66.html

I remember being pleased with it, performed well and looked about as good as any black hardware, especially for the price.

That is a nice guitar. Dig it!
