PJ Harvey (the antidote to Brittany Howard :p) is mainly an Orange user, although occasionally Vox and Marshall too.

Originally Orange amps were simply Matamp amps sold through a London shop called
Orange.....anyway the most famous Matamp user was probably Peter Green and while I
remember seeing a picture of B B King infront of an Orange amp and also a picture of
Stevie Wonder in a studio with a range of Orange amps.... regular Orange users
MC5 can be seen in action on youtube sporting a full Orange backline.

Think that MC5 footage you refer to is German Beat Club footage?

Which is why Jimmy Page's said "Orange by Matamp" on the faceplate. Cooper contracted Mathias to make em for his shop and when the deal was over, Cliff kept em going and this is when it became "Orange - Voice of the World" instead of "Orange by Matamp". Pretty sure those Oranges are just a GT120 (or whatever model Matamp it was) in an orange chassis..

Stevie was indeed an endorsee. I've seen plenty of old ads..
Swans back line is all Orange nowadays too..

Orange was, like Hiwatt, one of the also brands.

The amps that were used a lot in the 60-80s were Fender and Marshall and they led by a good distance. In the 60s Vox was prominent for obvious reasons but I don't remember them being much used into the 70s.

Vox and Orange are much bigger brand names now. I don't recall Laney at all until I came across them as a budget brand in the 1990s.

The Flamin'Groovies in the early '70s in their "english era", they used Orange 200 watts PA as guitar amps.

I believe it actually just said Orange with Matamp in a smaller font underneath as:

If people want to see how many artistes actually used Orange in the 70s 'The Book of Orange' by Cliff Cooper is a good place to start.

Nice history and loads of pics.

BTW for the OP, they are great amps. I currently gig with both a Tiny and Dual Terror

The first guitar player I ever associated with Orange was Tim Sult of Clutch. I think the one's I saw him using first were OR 120's. I fell in love with that fat overdrive but almost FUZZ tone.

Peter Green was probably the second person I noticed with them. Now they're everywhere. I'm glad too. I really dig their sound. I think it's a little rounder and less fizzy than the typical high gain amp. LOVE the bass-y-r sounds they can get too.

I know the book you're talking about, It looks like a really fun book to have around just to page through. I'd love to have a Tiny Terror, glad to hear you like yours. If I was looking for an amp to do some gigging with I'd probably take the plunge and get one.

It is an excellent book. It's in the 'flipbook' style so one side covers the history and the other is all about building the brand
