Thinking about getting one...tried the Ibanez Tonelok...pretty cool, but it has this distortion setting I don't want or need.

Any suggestions and where would I place it in my chain?

I would put the auto-wah first (or thereabouts) in your signal chain. Since the effect is triggered by the dynamics of your signal, you want it to see the dynamics that are coming out of the instrument, not the potentially compressed signal coming out of another effect.

I like my mxr auto-q, but am considering a EH Q-Tron. I have mine after all the dirt, before the delay. Having all true bypass pedals help what mgwhit is talking a about.

First in chain if possible. I like to run an autowah in the loop of a blender pedal such as those made by barge Concept. So I can run it around 60% wet 40% dry to keep a bit of my original tone integrity. The idea came to me since I was mainly using my Q-tron plus at the mix setting where it blends 50% of the wet signal. By the way the big Q-tron+ is certainly one of the best auto wah with the Mu-Tron, it's just too bulky...

I want to also get a EH Graphic Fuzz, and I have a POG so I was thinking of getting the large Qtron and put all three on a seperate board.

The Maxon/Ibanez AF-9 cirquit is based on the old mutron III,in a small ibanez pedal format. The new ones by Maxon are true bypass also.

I had a Dunlop Crybaby Q-Zone for a while and really enjoyed it. You can find them cheap used. And I believe that's one of the effects Slash uses if you care about that kind of thing. Either way @ around $35 used you can't really lose if you don't like it. Mine performed perfectly and had a nice sweep and focus. I just ended up not using it very much and now own a Budda Bud Wah that gets touched maybe 4 times in a 12 song set.

I'm going to be getting a Boss AW-3 soon. I saw a video of Jonny Lang playing one and it sounded cool. His signal chain was:

guitar-Rt66 OD-regular wah-auto wah-delay

Actually, I'm getting two & keeping one. I'm going to order the Boss and the Guyatone WR-3, which I've heard great things about.

Any chance of posting that Johnny Lang clip?

There's 2 clips... you need to watch them both to see where he talks about & plays the Boss AW-3...

I don't usually like Boss pedals, but the Guyatone stuff I do like. I just don't know how to attach one of those little mini pedals to my board?

I was also thinking of the Danelectro French Fries...anyone ever try that one?

I use an Emma Discumbobulator-I saw Warren Haynes with Govt Mule a few years back and was knocked out by his auto wah sounds-even for rhythms. I asked his tech and bought one the next day. Great pedal, and I also use it early-right after my Boss OC-2 Octave pedal. I also have an old 70's mxr pedal-it's awesome, but only sounds that way when the batteries are at a particular spot in terms of voltage. The digitech Synth Wah is also cool-it has the stock sounds as you'd expect, and some very...um...synth-like tones, too.

Love me some auto-wah-I gig often without a straight wah, but almost never without an auto-wah.

Good luck in your search, schenkadere!

Got the Boss AW-3 today. Exactly what I was expecting... if you like it in those Jonny Lang vids (links) I posted, then you'll like it. I can only ever see myself using the "regular" mode ("up"), but it's a unique sound, a little different from a regular wah... instead of just wanking away with your foot in tempo, or on sustained notes, like most people use a regular wah, this one is touch sensitive and makes you play it. Like, more thought has to go into than just the wakka-wakka-wakka of a normal wah.

Anyway, just thought I'd chime in with my $0.02 in case anybody cared...

Guyatone WR-3 Wah Rocker fan here. I got it used ($35) and it's been in my pedalboard ever since. Works better with humbuckers than single coils (IMO) but it has some great sounds, and the intensity switch is a brilliant idea.

I put my Boss AW-2 first in line, right after the guitar. Whacka, whacka, whack, whack!

Guyatone wah rocker in the first spot on the board.
I've had several.
The guyatone is tiny cheap and very attack sensitive.
People do point and stare when you use auto wah but I have learned to live with their mocking taunts.
It might be the wizard hat though.

I had an autowah when they first came out in the late 70's. I never really used it. I did play with a keyboard player that used one with a Fender Rhodes and got some really cool funk tones.

I used a T-Wah when I was in a Grateful Dead cover band. It was always used by itself so placement didn't matter.

I pulled it out just last weekend for a new song that sort of reminds of Box of Rain, but it wasn't right for the song.

It's really interesting working with a pedal like that. I think it makes my picking technique stronger by making me more aware of accenting notes.
