When George installed my new Green Onions pickups the other day, I asked for a set of strings with a wound G. The only set on the shelf with wound G strings was a stainless-steel flatwound "jazz" string; I forget the brand.

So I bought a set of 11s off the rack, and we added in a wound G string from the store's supply of singles.

Bad idea. The pickups sound awesome. That's probably part of the reason the G string sounds so bad, like a goose in the clarinet section.

What brand should I look for to get sets with wound G strings?

 Great description.

Ernie Ball makes an 11-52 set that has a 22 G, but that's too much for my hands. The D'Addario Reg Light, Wound 3rd (10-46) looks good, with an 18 for G.
These should balance better than mixing brands.

D'Addario has two sets that I'm aware of with wound Gs. The XL (Nickel Round Wounds) come in 11-49 (EXL115W set) and 10-46 (EXL110W). The "W" in the set number indicates the wound 3rd.

I have the 11-49 set on an Esquire and like the strings a lot.

I'd add: If you've never done so, try a set of flatwounds. I use D'Addario Chromes 10-48s (w/ a wound 0.020 G) on just about all my guitars, and love them. They're not just for jazz, you know...

I buy the bulk wound .018 strings from Just Strings. (no one seems to have any thinner)
I have mixed them in with D'Addaruis and Ernie Balls. No problems. I have also purchased the D'addario EXL110W sets from them at a good price.
A little harder to find, but I think JS carries them is the Gibson L5's.

I always use a wound G on all my guitars. I like the sound and I have found it eliminates all the problems of the G string tuning and intonation.

Pyramid has a 7 string set, Pure Nickel Round Wound, with a plain and wound G. These are the same strings Paul McCartney (bass) used when in Germany. They are German made and family owned since 1850. I won't use anything else.

+1 I've been using EXL110Ws for over 20 years, and in the past year, have started using EXL115Ws to beef up my sound a little bit. I've had nothing but good results with D'Addario wound G string sets.

String Info

You might enjoy the "Just Strings" website: you'll be able to see most of the available string manufacturers, their various sets of strings, and usually the exact gauges of all 6 strings and which has a wound vs. a plain 3rd. (For example, I always pay attention to whether any particualr set of .011's uses a .013-15 for the 2nd string or a .017 or .018 for the 3rd -- makes a big difference to me!)

P.S. I'll second the love for D'Addario Chromes. While I usually swap out the wrapped 3rd for a plain 3rd, I love these flatwounds, even for rock and blues. Smooth-feeling, quiet, long-lasting and surprisingly bright!

I've been using a GHS.020 wound G with my EB .011 power slinkys for quite some time. The .020 gives the tone a bit more "oomph".
