Hi all,

I'm about to commence only my second ever neck build, inspired by finding some decent quality sapele in a skip next to the rehearsal studio I use (there's a joiners next door).
anyhow, I'm not really set up to rout a curved truss rod channel, so I need something that will sit in a flat channel. Box section rods are easy enough to come by, but I was intrigued by the 'Hot Rods' sold through Stewmac. The thing I don't like so much about Box sections is that they involve taking out quite a lot of wood....
Thoughts welcomed by those who know more than me.

Cheers

I see your in London..

I recommend and use these for one piece necks.

He does a whole bunch of sizes and types so you may want to check out the others.

Failing that give Dave a call at luthiersupplies.co.uk

Thanks for that. I was going to give one of Dave's box section one's a go as he warned me off his dual action rods as they require a lot of wood removal. It's actually a 2 piece sapele rosewood neck I'm making, although I can't see a reason why the one you recommended wouldn't go in a 2 piece? Does it go in a flat channel though?

Cheers again.

P.S - London, Essex, who's counting really?

Dave does all sorts of rods but the last few times I've been there I've picked up the Gibson style rods and picked up others from the link I posted.

Those rods will fit in a square channel or a round bottom channel at 6mm. I've posted this pic before and have others if you need them for reference.

You don't remove significant amounts of timber with the box section rods by the way. 10 or 12mm square under the f/b normally.

I'm on the Herts/Essex border so don't count as London any more either.

The U-section around the rod, if glued in well (tight route) significantly stiffens the neck. I've used quite a few of them.

I'll stick with the u channel then. Might even try making a bass neck on that recommendation too....
By Herts / Essex you mean Harlow don't you? There's no shame in Essex! :DThat said, I'm essex / suffolk borders ;-)

LOL, No not Harlow although that is pretty close. Too close in fact. I'm quite close to the airport and live near the sunny and attractive market town of Bishops Stortford.

To be honest the rod I posted a link to is just as easy and simple to fit as a u section so you can happily proceed with either.
