Does anyone know if a P90 pup template would do for a Gretsch Filtertron or TV Jones.I know TVJones do a template from their site but to ship to the UK ...I could buy a new car for the amount it costs.I've tried to make my own template, albeit one effort, and it just didn't cut it for me.I can get hold of a P90 template for the price of a small dog !!

I think it would fit just about in a P90 route. I've got a junior jet with TV Jones designed mini 'bucker which has the same footprint as the filtertron. I was toying with dropping a P90 into the guitar instead and it is ever so slightly smaller (about the same width but a little narrower) so you'd have to widen the rout by maybe 0.5mm it would be a tad scruffy but should work just about... That said, the filtertron comes with a mounting ring so that might hide any scruffy rout edges anyway?

MMMmmm ? So basically if I did get a P90 template I'd have to modify it slightly anyway...more or less what I tried to do with my humbucker template and to me it doesn't sit tight enough even allowing for some wood shrinkage.I'll keep my eyes peeled on the thread for a while before I commit to something.Thanks.

I'll try to do some pics of what I have on my junior jet (when I get a chance) to give you an idea. Thing is, the filtertron itself I think, is actually quite a bit smaller than a P90, but once you have the mounting ring in place you'd be golden, I reckon, but in my world, good enough really is good enough!

If the client wanted pick up rings I'd be ok with the one I made, but this body is pick up ring-less !

You'll have lots o' route showing if ya don't use a pickup ring.

I use the Filtertron with no ears or the tabs........if you use a filtertron with the ears and a mounting ring its gonna still be really close.

I've done this a few times...

The P-90 route is wider than a Filtertron (widthwise, from Low E to High E string), but is very close to correct from top to bottom (parallel to frets/bridge). That's for both units - with and without the base tabs.

The pickup ring (Gretsch style) will cover the route, but you may need to add some wooden spacers on either side to give you something to screw the ring into. The pickup itself, as you know, screws directly into the cavity.

Depth should also be no problem.

then no, the filtertron is too small. TV jones has an article on upgrading from the cheap pickups I have in my junior jet, to filtertrons. (link removed) then go to electromatic pro jet mod and look at pic no 10. the shim in that pic is about where a P90 sits up to. as you'll see, the p'up ring covers that nicely, but ringless.... i think not.
P.S, you wouldn't happen to know where a bloke can buy Korina / Limba / Afara in the UK would you??

Try Dave at David Dyke Luthier.I get all my wood from there and his place is a true Aladdin's cave full of magical wood....I'd be surprised if he didn't have what you need.

Well this is what I have to do basically but with a neck pup as well.I'm going to make another template using a PDF that a kind member has sent me and then route on a bit of scrap...I'll know if and when it's right and tight !

Yep-You guys know that easily.....was trying to give OP an idea.

As mentioned though....TV JONES does have a P-90 cased p'up.....but doesn't look alot like a filtertron.......

I say load a P-90 up on this project and then on to the next.
