I've searched the net, and not just for a few minutes, either. I can not find a wiring diagram for a dummy coil in a telecaster. I'm also looking to put it on a switch so I can bypass it if I want. Only on/off, not any series or parallel.

Has anyone here seen such a thing? I have the coils, I will be getting routed guitars back tomorrow. I'm ready to get to work installing this bugger, but I can't find any wiring diagrams. Can find 'em all day long for strats, but not telecasters. Can find series/parallel switching diagrams, but not dummy coil on/off.

Thanks in advance!

Can you share the dummy coil strat wiring you've found so I can take a look at it?

Hi. I'm having trouble finding the various diagrams I've located. If I find them, I'll post them. Here is one, again for strats. https://ironstone-guitar-pickups.co.uk/single-coil-pickup-dummy-coil/

Yep, I've read that at least twice. I've found some posts from Rob here as well. One gets close to explaining it entirely in text, but I'd still feel better about seeing a diagram, but it doesn't address how to wire it with a bypass switch. I'd really prefer to be able to switch the dummy coil in and out. I'm thinking of just contacting Rob directly. I've bought and own enough of his pickups, and been among one of his best advertisers for Cavalier pickups, I suspect he would help a loyal long term customer ;-)

I saw that weeks ago, but somehow my eyes did *not* register the wiring diagrams. I'm having to make sense out the diagram for a tele, but have to figure out how to replace and wire a switch in place of the push/pull pot. Rob has a diagram with an SPST, but I am not able to make sense out of that yet. Thanks again, as a second look at this allowed me to see what I had overlooked all the times I had read that article before. How I missed the wiring diagrams, I can't fathom.

get a switch, open up your tele, get some alligator clips and get to work man!

You can do it. A picture is worth a thousand words and a little work is worth a thousand pictures.

Here's how to do it with a reversible-polarity dummy coil.

I believe that reverses the effective winding direction. Since dummy coils don't have magnets there's no polarity to reverse, unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Reversing the coil can make a difference in the amount of noise reduction.

I thought it will be some standard information here but a lot of help. I have a Stratocaster And interested if hb half or Strat/tele coil Works better to tame P90?

I've only just now checked back in, and I have done just that. I've posted a new thread about how utterly successful the project was. I'm doing it to all my other teles.

Pegoo, thank you so much for that. I wish I'd seen it earlier, but I did get it worked out. Curiously, my wiring on the switch was slightly different, but it worked. I'll try your wiring on the next one. I have a second dummy coil from the same source, and will be having my G&L routed soon. So I'll be doing it again. Eventually my third tele will get the treatment. Thank you sincerely for the help!

It may be. The diagram I posted allows you to flip the polarity on the dummy coil.
Right. That's what I was referring to, I think. When you say polarity I think north/south pole piece orientation. Are you referring to series/parallel, or something else? The answer is probably obvious, but having been sick for over two weeks with the illness I believe we're not supposed to mention, I'm seriously muddle headed.

either way, I really appreciated the diagram. It's saved in multiple locations for future reference.

Is the third position off?

It reverses the dummy coil's polarity, sort of like spinning a top left or right. One polarity will usually be quieter than the other. It's not series/parallel.

The center position takes the dummy coil out of the circuit.

Okay, I understand. Thanks again for the help. Maybe it will kill the remaining five to ten percent of the noise.

Hey Peegoo. Just checking with you. I finally was able to get to wire the switch. It's not working at all. I've wired it as you show in the diagram, with one small exception. Where you have the out from the 3pdt to the tone, I ran that to the other end of that wire between tone and volume, and ran the 3pdt to the volume pot input. I can't see how that would cause it to not work, as that's where it's going from the tone anyway. Am I wrong and revealing my ignorance in public? Wouldn't be the first time...

Just thought I'd ask, just in case.

@Endless Mike

What do you mean by "not working?" As in no signal at the output jack? Or no noise cancelation?

A dummy coil in a passive guitar circuit works in a manner similar to three-wire balancing in an XLR mic cable: it's designed to cancel noise in the signal.

It passes signal, but the dummy coil isn't working in any of the positions. All three positions are all the same noisy single coil sound.
Sorry for the vagueness. That's what happens when you try to dash something of quickly last thing before bed.
