I just come back home with a 2004 Highway 1 Telecaster in 3 tone sunburst (I suppose)! Although putting the serial number in the online fender search tool give no result (I don't know why), I strongly believe it is all original.

Does anyone have any idea which kind of pickups were in these 1st version of Highway 1? They sound quite nice in my opinion. I also have a 2020 Player series, and these one seems a bit more vintage sounding in my hears.

From the above thread:

From Fender part list -The early Hwy1 (before 2005)

0053678000 Pickup, Neck, Mexico Vintage Tele

0055216000 Pickup, Bridge, Mexico 50's Tele

I love mine as is too.

While looking more in details for this guitar specs, I found it should have a 5 screws pickguard, but mine has a standard 8 screws cream colored pickguard... at this point it is possible the guitar has been modified..

Having entered many Highway 1 version 1 serials I have never achieved a hit with the Fender serial search. They do not appear to have been entered on the database.
AFAIK, the pg changed from 5 hole to 8 hole somewhere around 2005.
The version you have could be a 1a with Greasebucket which is possibly when the pg change happened.

Nice, real low mileage, from the looks of it. Rosewood looks real nice. Great fretwire size, unlike the later ones with super large wire.

If stock, those pickups are somewhat overwound A3s, and are not RWRP so you won't get noise canceling in the middle position. Much, much better than the "Upgrade" A3 pickups in the later generation Highway Ones.

Body finish is real fragile, so take good care of it.

I have a 2004 3 tone sunburst highway one I bought new. Almost the same as yours but with the maple neck. Mine came with 8 screw as standard (before I bought a 5 screw bakelite). Pretty sure yours looks stock. I still LOVE mine. You should get some brass saddles it does improve the guitar (I got the compensated ones). The pickups sound fine, I regularly consider changing them but can't make my mind up... That's been going on for 20 years hehe. Also like someone else said mine has the greasebucket. I did email fender for a spec sheet years ago. If I can find the email I'll post it

Nut width 1.6875 !?

I did not know that.

Holy crap.

If that’s a full 1 11/16 , the difference is noticeable compared to a 1.65 given both having similar depths.

That’s a great looking Guitar.

I don’t suppose they made any of those that were like 7 pounds even do you? 😆 I know, I know… That’s asking a lot

Always loved these, such bang for the buck when they were new. Brilliant specs. Guthrie Trapp sounded excellent with Mexican pickups in his old tele, if these are the original pups I’m sure they’re more than fine. I’m jealous, these are great guitars.
