I have tried a couple of Tele ultras and loved the neck, loved the access to the higher frets, liked the noiseless pickups and definitely had no trouble making use of the belly cut. I just didn’t dig the Texas Tea finish up close.Anybody wise thinks it looks a bit gimmicky? Maybe I’m too old fashioned when it comes to guitar finishes. I know it comes in other colors, but I also have a major hankering for a black tele with binding. I really wish Fender offered it in black.

I owned a Texas Tea ultra and the color was my second favorite feature, after the neck. I see where you are coming from though.

I think it's an odd color. Might as well call it Crude. It's like they messed up an expensive giant batch of paint and then decided "We'll call this Texas T"

Mine (I think it was a 2019?) was very subtle as compared to others I have seen. I passed it on because I didn’t play it enough and it was too expensive to leave sitting around.

Fender Japan has made black bound TL-62s for decades.

Colors aren't perceived hor appreciated the same, by everyone. I thought the contrast/combination of te paint color and the pickguard and hardware was great- it reminded me of a motorcycle that was on Biker Buildoff- anything painted was black and any bare metal was brushed Nickel.

I saw a Mercedes that was painted in almost the same color- I thought it was spectacular.

I'm not sure.

They go for over 21 hundred bones now.

Was it cheaper in 2021?

:(

I don't know how much they were in '21 but I remember when they came out that a local store had a tag of $1599 on them- that place showed full price, then discounted to whatever they wanted. This was pre-COVID and the one in the first link is used, which is the reason I was surprised.

Nice color when it's someone else's guitar. Cheers to anyone who chooses it. I would never buy it though. Too many beautiful Teles and color options to pick that one.

I'd get really tired of having to change my belt and shoes to match it every time I felt like playing.

Freaking brown stuff. So much easier with black.

I think when I got mine in early 2020 they were $1900. I got it mint for $1600, and sold it a year or so ago for $1700. I was expecting to be haggled down, and wasn’t.

I did like the finish on mine. The top binding and pickguard were classy. The pickups and electronics sounded pleasant. I’m not a huge fan of belly carves and don’t play high on the neck, but I didn’t mind the touches. To be honest, while I originally loved the neck, after a while it just didn’t feel “right” to me. It was very, very well-made, but I was a little paranoid about bumping it. It was too nice for me, and felt a little sterile.

I’m not really a Custom Shop guy. I don’t generally like relics. The vast majority of vintage electric guitars I’ve played were less than thrilling, so that’s a bug that never really bit me. I like production guitars that I can tinker with and not feel like I’m committing some mortal sin.

It was a fine instrument, but it wasn’t the guitar for me. I have said that about a lot of guitars all up and down the price spectrum.

I have a major hankering for a Japanese black double bound, but when I tried the Ultra, I had to appreciate the extra access to the upper frets. Mind you, nobody in my band (including me) looks very happy when my left hand wanders to that end of the neck. And, again, the belly cut was not completely unnecessar.

I largely agree with you. From up close it's too metallic for me: you can kind of see the flakes in the finish. Not subtle enough for my taste.
From further away though? I think it looks stunning, stylish and is one of Fenders best finishes.

Gee, I wouldn’t have to. Then again, I don’t like black clothes, shoes or cars, etc.

With black I’d have to buy new shoes and a belt.

I wanted a Jazz Bass Ultra V in Texas Tea, but the universe (aka Fender USA HQ) decided it was not to be. I wouldn't rush to get another guitar in that colour, but for some reason the J bass was crying out for it.

I like the color, have the tele. It reminds me of the actual color of lighter gravity west Texas crude oil (Texas Tea) when it comes out of the well, so I think Fender nailed it!

I hate fancy finishes on telecasters. Blonde, or auto paint, or good ole crude fender sunburst is how they should look, IMO.
