People here don't seem to know what a Flashing Red Traffic Light means.

One of the intersections in town had flashing red lights yesterday. The lights must have been messed up. I saw three vehicles run the light. It's supposed to be stop and go. Do people not know this any more? Isn't this still on the drivers test?

They know it, so they assume the others drivers will stop.

Don't make me get MADD!

People where I live don't know what a stop sign or turn signal is.

The other day I was behind a school bus on the way to work. The driver used no turn signal, and drove through several stop signs. I hear the Fire Dept respond to several crashes a day. It's just foolish and dangerous to others to blow off laws and common sense driving.

I simply cannot understand. You can see that the NC population is half of NY but the roads are twice as dangerous.

Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly things get lost when it comes to the basics. Some people here don't understand what a solid red means either, so I guess I shouldn't expect a lot.

Also - the ever-increasing number of pedestrian deaths where I live, mostly due to people just stepping off the curb directly into traffic without looking - whether in a crosswalk or not. Common sense is disappearing from the human genome. I blame the schools; modern education is teaching kids how not to think.

Yup. Flashing red = complete stop. I can't imagine how that's open to ambiguity.

Laws without enforcement are suggestions.

People tend to do what they want when they can get away with it.
This.

Every morning I drive through a elementary school zone. The speed limit drops to 25 mph. Every day people going 45 in massive lifted 4X4s with low profile rims (I don't get that either) tailgate me and swear at me like I am a jerk for caring about my community and school kids enough to respect the law.

The police could make serious bank on those school zone tickets and all the failure to stop and signal violations, but they hang out behind the Parks Dept shed instead. My dash cam is full of traffic events that seem inexplicable. I almost got in a head-on collision because some guy decided he wanted to go the wrong way down a 1-way street instead go going around. He just smiled and waved like it was totally normal as I swerved to avoid the collision.

Some people don’t care/learn unless there is a consequence.

Did you drop a dime on a call to the school district he was driving for?

My district took reports of bad driving very seriously.
I've lived in various parts of the rural southern US long enough to know better. The driver is likely someone's cousin or sister or Momma. That's how things work around here. I'd become the problem.

They can always ask the Cop when they get pulled over.

I used to live on a one-way residential street. Once I saw someone going the wrong way -- in reverse! And it wasn't like he was just backing up a bit, he drove the length of the block like that. I guess he thought the one-way just referred to which way the car pointed, not which way it was travelling. The best part is that he backed up to an intersection, then crossed it in reverse and kept going backwards up the next block, which was also one-way. What a goof!

I'm in England. What is this flashing light of which you speak?

If there's a problem with the traffic lights whoever is in charge of such things makes them flash red lights in every direction. What you're supposed to do is stop at the flashing red light, then proceed when it's safe to do so. The usual result, however, is usually some form of chaos.

Simple really, where as a light turning yellow is go very fast, blinking re is a faux slower variation. The pretend almost stop.. i.e. total pause?
