I snapped the head off one of the 8 screws holding the pickups to the body. Does anyone know a good source for these screws? Similar/identical to P90 mounting screws? But made from a tough steel, not whatever pot metal?

McMaster-Carr? StewMac? Buy a lathe and be the change I want to see?

Fender supplies them ...

You should be able to get the broken screw out of the body with a good set of gripping pliers, turning it slowly. Avoiding them breaking again may involve enlarging the hole a little and/or lubricating the screw.

You could also consider switching to M3 rivet nuts and humbucker-style screws (with springs instead of foam rubber), which is probably how JM pickup height adjustment should have been designed in the first place. An adjustment screw that screws into wood never did make much sense.

I was hoping to avoid paying $1.25/screw to replace the stock garbage with identical garbage. But I appreciate that this particular combination of screw length and diameter does not have several other industrial uses.

Your threaded insert concept is intriguing to me, if I can find some that'll fit without blowing through the back of the body I may go that route.

Thanks for the idea.

I've had good luck getting hard-to-find screws, etc. at Philadelphia Luthiers https://www.philadelphialuthiertools.com/screws-nuts/

Yep, you've found out that a lot of guitar screws have the strenght of cottage cheese.

For several years, if I've needed to replace wood or saddle screws, I've sourced appropriate stainless steel ones cheaply from Ebay.

I suggest going to a fastenal or something like it and getting grade 8. That is the strong stuff.

Those are 1 1/2” long #4 round head wood screws. They are thin and made of mild steel. Screws are not graded. Stainless steel will snap faster than the cold formed steel screws that are original. Seems to me you need to manage your expectations for how much torque you can put on these screws. When raising or lowering the pickup adjust all four screws a little at a time. This will distribute the load evenly across all four screws and reduce screw binding. You can also put some wax on the threads of the screws that way they won’t bind up in the wood. Also the screw holes on the pickup covers are the same size as the screws. If you drill those holes slightly larger the cover won’t bind the screws as much when you raise or lower the pickup.

Not sure how far you are into all this but...

... In a related thing... screwing screws into solid body guitars... I like to put the Dunlop style strap buttons on every guitar. You can buy just the strap pin sides in sets for around $6.00, so I can use one strap for several guitars...

What I do (and I might suggest) is the take one of the new screws, before using it to hold anything, and screw it into the body as far as possible. For the screws that come with the Dunlops, they are just a smidgen longer (most times) then the factory strap button screw. Plus the head of the factory screws doesn't fit down inside the Dunlop provided button.

So, try this... use one spare screw to screw down into the wood to re-create some threads in the wood that maybe weren't piloted right the first time. Screw it in just a little past the depth needed to do it's work. Then, when the pups are back in, it'll screw in and hold really well... and be tight.

FWIW, if your screw hole(s) gets stripped out... take an itsy 1/4 drop (or less) of Elmer's (or any wood) glue, stuff the pointy end of a toothpick in there first (one won't need much)... break off a teeny piece and that alone will cause enough friction for the screw to work. When the glue dries, it wil adhere to the grain of te wood in the tiny hole and (shouldn't) won't come out... Works on stripped pick gaurd screw holes, too...

And... make sure you use the right size Phillips head for the job. Having one too big, or not sharp will strip the head quick... I use a very small (#0 Phillips head) for the pickup screws and any pickgaurd screws

Here's a chart of Phillips sizes...
Phillips Head Sizes.jpg

Here's a tip for installing the Dunlop strap button side pieces... I use a Crescent (brand) "6 in 1" and one os the magnetic Phillips ends fits down inside the Dunlop strap button with room the spare... and is super sharp and if you're careful, won't strip the cheap pot metal Dunlop screws.

I suppose I could go to the hardware store and buy a whole small bag of hardened woof screws with this same head... but once its in there and tight, it's not going anywhere... some hardware stores (not the big box stores) still sell individual screws...

My 4-1/2 cents

Most music shops should carry replacement stainless steel screws. Home Depot also carries them and you can buy singles.
