Before The Bubble I owned both.
A 1956 and a 1976.
Here's the important part - Today
without question I want a Joyo Sweet Baby Style Champ.
They are phenomenal Amplifiers.
Thank You Very Much.

old thread...

SFVC for me. when the EC VC came out, I read all the hype and had to get one. picked up one in mint condition and played it for a while and the sound just wasn't for me. Sounded too dirty, which I know a lot of people like, but it broke up too early. beautiful looking amp though. sold it
I already had the SF and after getting rid of the EC, I started appreciating it so much more. The tremolo has almost a 3D effect, almost like a delay, only more "airy". I finally figured out earlier this year that it would sound good with a reverb pedal, so I got one and it just adds another dimension to the amp when I want it.

So definitely in the SF/BF camp....

Hi Dr. Bill!
I have both--a Tungsten Mosaic 8" tweed and a '78 Vibro Champ. Tweed Champs are darker and a fairly bright speaker is essential. ... I've also done a lot of speaker swapping, and prefer the Jensen RI C8R or Weber Signature Alnico 8S (ribbed cone) in the tweed and the Weber Signature Ceramic 8 (smooth cone) in the Vibro Champ...
This could have been written by me ;)
I own a Fender ´57 RI Champ and a ´73 Vibro-Champ - and I use the AlNiCo Oxford from the VC in the Tweed (because it´s brighter!) and the 57 RI´s Weber Alnico 8S in the VC!

I´d be hard pressed to say which one I like better... they´re both great for what they are!

cheers - 68.

Great minds think alike! :) I was under the impression that Fender was using the smooth-cone alnico 8 (not the ribbed 8S) in the '57 RI. I tried one in my Tungsten (in fact, that's what Adam Palow specs for that amp) and found it too dark.

Yes, you´re right, it´s the one with the smooth cone - sorry for the confusion!
And yes, I also thought it was too dark for the Tweed Champ - that´s why I swapped ;)

cheers - 68.

For some reason that smooth-cone Weber signature (both ceramic and alnico) works extraordinarily well in a Vibro Champ. I've tried a bunch of speakers in mine and that's the clear winner. I even like it better than the Jupiter 8C that everybody raves about.

This thread made me get out the baby Monoprice & Strat and do some very low volume noodling ( amp Volume on '1.5'- on 5-watt mode)

I have a Biyang Reverb pedal that I got for cheap kicks, to go with the cheap amp.
All sounds very nice, if you dont mind a really clean tone ( at this level)

This pedal looks like fun:

Has a “sag”knob and a mid cut. Jay gets some extreme tones, like a Champ about to explode.

I have a SFVC and a 1960 Gibson Skylark which is quite similar to a tweed champ. The Skylark has a more natural sound and warmer overdrive. SFVC has that cool mid scoop sound that gives you sparkly cleans and aggressive distortion. Both are cool depending on your personal taste and needs

For me it is overdrive/distortion sounds definitely the tweed Champ, and for clean sounds definitely the BF/SF Champ.

I have owned both the Victoria 512 and the Fender 57 Custom Champ. Both great amps. I finally settled on a Headstrong Santa Cruz which I find much more versatile.

I also am the original owner of a 1978 silver face Vibro Champ. Several years ago I had the tone stack by pass mod done to it which essentially turns into to a tweed champ. Here is a video I did which I think demonstrates the tone stock mod. I start with the tweed mode then put it back to original.
