I'm in a safe space and among friends / no judgment here. So, here goes.
I need a loud/efficient and economical 10" for my new/old Peavey.

I thought a Backstage Plus would be a really nice little amp to take with me
to band practice (usually in buddy Henry's garage). I don't want to lug my
vintage Princeton everywhere with me, and my ~5W builds can't keep up.
So I start looking for a Backstage Plus -- For very few dollars. Well, I found
the cheapest-ass one out there. $20. Guy wasn't sure it worked. Turns out
the amp works but the speaker is shot.

So I get it home and couldn't get on with the PV aesthetics. One thing led to
another, and here we are:

Backstage Plus - 1 (Luis, Facebook MP, 10.6.22).jpgIMG_1909.JPG

SO, the point -- I'm looking for speaker suggestions for an efficient and fairly
inexpensive 10" for this little beast.

Thanks.

Look into the Jensen Mod range.

Affordable, yes. Efficient, no. The Mods have some of the lowest measured SPLs on the market; most are in the low 90s.

Eminence Legend 1058 would fit the bill. You can find them around $50 used. They're a modern day classic and a perfect match for any American-voiced amp.

ICB -- Thank you. Will definitely see about a used 1058.

Interesting tangent about a Jensen Mod. I converted a couple of Philco 37-620s
into ~5w champ-ish circuits. This console PhilcoChamp ended up with a Jensen
Mod in it because I had it around from I-forget-what. It is INSANELY loud for a
~5w amp. I had always assumed that it was the speaker. Guess not / Oh well.

inexpensive

If you could give us some idea of what inexpensive translates to I'm sure we can offer the most optimal suggestions (..just trying to be helpful, not nit-pick).

Also, does the amp 'expect' and 8 ohm load ?

1) It'd be great to get this done used for $50-70, although in this market
I dunno. People where I live want top dollar for all kinds of crap.
2) Yep - 8 ohm.
3) Thanks / appreciated.

OK, cool thanks. I'll poke around and research some options and post back if I think I can get close to requirements.

A couple pretty obvious options that pop right out are a couple of Jensen (Recoton, the Italian based manufacturer):

Jensen Mod 10-35 (35W, 8ohm, 94db) running about $51 new
Jensen Mod 10-50 (50W, 8ohm, about 96db) running about $65 new

There are several Emi's that would probably work fine and are rated highly efficient (98db+)
Rajin Cajun, the 1058, etc. You'll pay a bit more though (about $110 and upward for many of those models)

WGS has a few that would be fine also, but again, price is likely to be around $100+
ET10 (more 'Brit' sounding), G10C/S, G10C, etc. -- depending on tone preferences.
etc

..Still looking around.. I may add more here soon.

I was about to say Jensen MODs, too.

Given the usage (band practice in an enclosed space) and the wattage of the amp (35 watts?), I’d still suggest a MOD 10-50, even though they are not very efficient.

The 10-50 is slightly more efficient than the 10-35, but not by much — both are around 94-95db.

I had two 10-35s in a 50watt combo I built and they could still move air. Not nearly as ear-splitting as the speakers I put in there now, but a 35 watt amp should still be shouting in a garage, even with a speaker as (in)efficient as a MOD.

Kept the MODs, by the way. I’m about to use one for a 3.5 watt amp build. I’ll figure something out for the other one :)

I’ve got a 1058 in a one channel Super Reverb I built into a Princeton Reverb chassis and cab.

Great speaker. Great suggestion. Haven’t checked the used market, though.

Also might want to consider the Celestion 10-30 (30W, 8ohm, 95db) about $52 new
Don't know much about it, but maybe that might be worth considering too.

Like guitar_paul1 suggests above, sometimes there are great speakers that are not nominally 'guitar speakers' that can be used in lieu of one that actually sound great and can often be got much cheaper [than a 'guitar' speaker].

Edit:

Note: I have 2 'non-guitar' speakers I installed in separate cabinets. I love each for what they do/how they sound (an 8" and a 12"). My speakers are not any of those I include links to below.

For kicks, some 'non-guitar' speakers that come close to doing the job (in terms of freq. response, sensitivity, power handling, cost, etc). No endorsemsent and the like -- just wanted to include links to available retailer [and, PE includes good product descriptions and specs for nearly all their products]:

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. (100.6 dbs and voiced like a Vintage 30 without the spike. The web page says there’s a 1 week lead time, but mine shipped immediately)

The 1058 is a preetty loud speaker.
The Weber 10F150 or 150T 50watt is a loud, great speaker, but not likely cheap unless you can find a good used one.

Another vote for the Emi Legend 1058 - simply one of the best 10" speakers out there - it sounds fuller than many other speakers of that size, almost like a 12", and it is very efficient/loud.
This speaker has made my Fender Frontman 25R my #1 gig amp.
Fantastic sound clean or w/breakup

Maybe this one:

" 99dB sensitivity and 800-5000Hz frequency range"

May not be the best for full range duty.
