Knowing that David Gates was pretty much the heart and soul of this band of top studio players, their output was really good.

Would love to hear comments from anyone who saw them in person!

Never saw them, but I saw dozens of local bands cover them in the '70s. Mother Freedom is still one of the all-time great garage songs.

I was never really into them, but did they actually tour?
I always thought they were a "studio" band.....of "studio" musicians?

Me!
It was 71 or 72, not sure.
It was at Palmer Auditorium, now Palmer Events Center here.
England Dan (Seals) and John Ford Coley opened up.
I must have been in the 9th grade.
I recall who ever played lead guitar on Guitar Man played a Tele, but he was out of tune.
I don’t remember if it was Larry Knechtel or Dean Parks, probably LK.
Weird, the stuff you remember.
This was one of my very first rock concerts I ever went to, and I went alone.

P.S.
Their website says six shows in Texas, including Austin in October 1972, ED&JFC opening!

I also assumed that as they were a group of top rank studio musicians,
they would lose studio dates (and therefore, a lot of money) if they were to go
play dates on the road. There's a YouTube clip of Gates playing on the Glen Campbell
Goodtime Hour, where he's joined by the host for a medley.

They definitely toured, and Larry Knechtel was a certified Wrecking Crew member.
Perhaps the albums were recorded with studio musicians.
Drummer Mike Botts later toured and recorded with Linda Ronstadt.

I never did, but even if I did I wouldn't admit it here..... ;)
Just like I never saw Barry Manilow or Michael Bolton in concert.... really I didn't

DG is a great songwriter. Larry was a top studio pianist (Bridge Over Troubled Water). The songs & musicianship were top notch.

Great band.

BTW: I loved Barry Manilow Live when I was a kid. On 8-track, no less... ;)

I swear it was the first concert I ever went to, at the Philly Academy of Music, and my Aunt took me. I was probably in middle school

I didn't like them, but she had a ticket and kindly invited me. I enjoyed it

EDIT: Go internet: Turns out they played the Philly Academy of music on 5/24/1972. I was 13.

Sadly I never saw them live, but just wanted to mention James Griffin was also a gifted songwriter and singer. I have two of his solo albums, and what he did was as good as Gates' music. IE he wrote the Carpenters' hit "For All We Know". Unfortunately, bands with two genius songwriters rarely last, and five years proved to be too long for Bread to stay together.
On a side note Bread's return AND last album together in 1977 (Lost without Your Love) was such a gem!
My two cents.

James Griffin had a really good country/rock band called the Remingtons, in the early 90’s.
I remember a song I like called I Could Love You With My Eyes Closed.
Great stuff!

I feel bad that I totally forgot about JG. A great songwriter. 👍
