This seems to be a divisive issue among the population of Weller fans. I like - correction, I love - the Jam. Style Council...no thanks. It is simply a matter of what you like and what you don't.

The only Style Council song I could stand was Speak Like a Child.

Weller chose to go in a different direction musically. That is the right of every artist. Buy what you like. Avoid what you don't. Whatever side of this debate you're on celebrate that the man has given us a body of work that millions of us can enjoy.

I actually found The Jam through The Style Council. I am a fan of both but the SC usually gets my vote.

Paul Weller is a very talented (and respected) musician and The Jam and Style Council were both great. But Style Council had Dee C Lee and that tips the scales in the Style Council's favour for me!!

I prefer the Jam. Down In the Tube Station at Midnight alone makes it an easy choice for me. Love that song.

But is it me or do both bands tend to have great bass? The Jam and Style Council have great bass tracks.

It's gotta be The Jam for me. Carnation is some of my favorite songs of all time. The Style Council discography is so solid and makes me very happy to listen to though.

Personally I prefer the Jam, but I was actually introduced to Paul Weller and his music through The Who. For a while the only version of "So Sad About Us" that I could find on Youtube was a cover by the Jam, and then there's this:

I know music is subjective, but I just don't see the appeal of Paul Weller since he left The Jam. Odd because I really did like the Jam, but I've caught him on programs like Jools Holland (where he almost seems to be worshipped) and if it's a recording I'll skip ahead to the next act. Maybe I'm not cool enough to like him now, but I would happily listen to The Jam.

much as i love The Style Council give me a young, angry Weller every time. political maturity doesn't necessarily make for better music.

The Jam were a true phenomenon of their age in the UK at least. Even when throw away were still energetic. Seeing the Jam on Marc Bolan show in 1977 when I was 11 made me switch from drums to guitar.

I understood even at the time why Paul split them up when I first saw them live. Paul wanted to make wide ranging soul and jazz tinged music and was fed up of the Jam. Some of those Style Council tracks are excellent and a lot are not.

The live band were where they were best and I saw them quite a few times, having a mate in the touring band (OK so biased there). Plenty of energy performance wise and excellent musicians. But much of the studio based stuff tended to not come across well, largely because it was under developed and he was surrounded by close family and yes men. Paul was also distracted by trying to do his own Apple with Respond and the bands on the label.

Some of his solo stuff is excellent too, especially Wild Wood. A lot of it is very samey though.

I really dislike Style Council. I've not listened to them since they were on TV/Radio in the 80's and I'm happy about that.

PW couldn't remain young & disaffected forever. He's an artist & had to move forward. I personally love the SC.
Both great bands.

Well, it's a much smaller leap from Jam-->Style Council than Clash-->Big Audio Dynamite (which I still think is fine music).

Style Council's music is tight, jazzy, well produced.

And his voice matured so well, IMHO.
