Y'know, she's one of those artists that I feel I should like, but her music does nothing for me, for some reason. Go figure

I like some of her music. However, I went to see her live one time and she was so drunk, she could barely perform. From what I've heard, that is not a one-time occurrence.

I just think that if a performer has that little respect for his or her audience, I am not going to be a part of that audience.

Uhm..........

Can anyone tell me about the Esquire?

Lucinda Williams' electric guitar is a '50s Fender Esquire with one pickup, strung with D'Addario .013s. "The guitar has a fat neck," says Stovicek, who Williams calls Flappy. "It feels like an acoustic. It's a great old guitar and fun to play." Williams was given the guitar by Nashville singer-songwriter Paul Kennerly after she played it one night while sitting in with him at a tiny club. She played a Memphis Minnie song on it and immediately swooned. "I loved that guitar," she says. "It had this amazing sound that came through this tiny little amp. A few days later I was hanging at Paul's house with Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris, and he said that the guitar was meant for me."

Williams began touring with it. At a show on the same bill with Counting Crows, the group's guitarist marveled at the Esquire. "Do you know how valuable this is?" he asked her. "It's worth somewhere in the range of $20,000." She thought that perhaps it was risky touring with it. "The potential problem is theft," she says. "But I don't like putting guitars away. They're meant to be played."

I've been a huge Lucinda fan for some time now and finally got to see her earlier this year. She was great and her guitar player Doug Pettibone was incredible.

my brother is not a big Country fan, but I gave him a copy of "Car Wheels", and it became one of his favorites. He used to play it every morning, and said it brought him good luck in business.

I think it says something when artists can make believers out of people who wouldn't normally like their type of music.

How can you argue with that.

I love Lucinda.

"car wheels" might well have been the best record of the 90's; if not, it was a close second behind "time out of mind", in my opinion...

those were the best two i heard, anyway...

+1 for "Car Wheels" being one of the best records of the '90s!

Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to see her live yet, but I love Lucinda's songwriting and her voice, and she always picks impeccably tasteful guitar players.

Change The Locks completely kicked ass. Why isn't that song on any of her albums? Tom Petty recorded it, and his version's not bad. Not as great as hers though. What a cool song!

Changed The Locks is on Live At The Fillmore and on the live CD that comes with the new release of Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

This is actually very interesting because,
1- I found out about her very interesting Esquire.
2- Because I have never hear the name Lucinda Williams before I saw that ACL show. It's good to know she has some respect out there.

You're kidding, right? I would be a big fan if she could sing her songs. She's got some good material. Singing? Not so much.

I agree, I bought her ACL DVD. My wife doesn't dig all my music, but I was playing it and she kept asking from the other room what was I listening to, she thought it was way bad, I had to agree she was out of tune on a few songs, I bought it mainly because Kenny Vaughn played on it...

We share a similar taste, my friend.

My wife got into Lucinda around the time of "Car Wheels" and I got to see her live back then--fabulous show. The musicians she had with her were the pinnacle of taste and tone.

But I worry for Lucinda. She's an alcoholic, to put it bluntly and I have heard both good and bad reports about her shows. She seems to deliver best when she is just short of falling over the cliff. How long can a person do that? I don't know.

Her songwriting and performing seem to flirt with the danger of being just shy of the abyss. Like Dylan, she's not a great singer in the traditional sense, but she is a great communicator of her songs. And she has written some great songs. I kinda pray that she finds a balance--for her muse and for her health.

"Change The Locks" is on the self titled album that was released in 1988.

That one and "Sweet Old World" are my favorite Lucinda albums....

Lucinda Williams - Passionate Kisses .....

Ouch! I have never seen that video. I"ve seen her live twice and I love her. Doug Pettibone is one of the best live guitarists tat I've seen. The shows that I saw in Milwaukee were fantastic.

I guess that anyone can have a bad show.

I've got to admit, it took me a couple of times through to really appreciate her singing, but I really have grown to like both her songwriting and singing. I got to hear her once live. I really liked Doug Pettibone's playing and he seemed (from my distant view point) to pull out a number of great classic guitars.

I saw her on ACL and was impressed by her back up band. And by the way, she scares me too!

I have to admit I had never heard of her before either. She sing Ok i guess, sounds like a decent karaoke singer and thats about it to me. Maybe its the booze I hear in a couple of those clips I dunno. IMHO she certianly isnt no Mary Chapin Carpenter atleast on Passionite kisses but there IS something in the other clips that may lead me to check out somemore of her songs.
