My grandparents had a crank telephone. You would ring the operator and tell her who to connect you with.

I memorized the following from the TV commercial they played ad infinitum when I was a kid in the late 50's, early 60's. Being the clown and constant attention seeker that I was (I ended up a guitar player in a band after all :)), I used to amuse my friends at school by reciting it:

Crest has been shown to be an effective decay preventive-dentifrice that can be of significant value when used as directed in a conscientiously applied program of oral hygiene and regular professional care.

Quite a sentence, but it sounds "really scientific", right?

And I used a slide rule in high school - electronic calculators had not been invented.

I remember watching the Shepard launch. We lived in a duplex house, and since we didn't have ... cable?... mom, dad, and I went next door and watched it with our neighbors. It was a BIG DEAL.

Earbuds in both ears?! Remember when transistor radios came with an ear plug for one ear?

I would listen to west coast baseball games in bed when I was young. The radio was under my pillow and the ear plug was in the ear on the pillow -- I don't think my parent ever knew!

Oh, yea. I was working in Parry Sound at that time, the home of Bobby Orr so you can guess what a big deal that game/series was.

I have been reading a collection of detective stories from the '20's and 30's it's some what disconcerting the number of variations on this theme..

    "Can you describe him,?"
    " Sure; old guy, 50 maybe 55"..

Mail-order crap on the back of comic books. X-Ray specs!

I remember sending away 25 cents for some martial arts 'book' (mimeographed flyer, more like).

One of the exercises to build strength and balance was to crouch, hugging your knees to your chest, balanced on the balls of your feet. Then hop. I think what they meant was to hop successively, for a total distance of 20 feet. But what they SAID, was to "hop 20 feet", and it even had a drawing, showing one impossibly long hop.

I nearly killed myself for months, trying to hop 20 feet in one shot. Jeez... I wonder how many other kids wasted their whole summer trying to perfect that move.
