Much of the pop of the early sixties (eg the above "Walking in the Sand", originally from the Shangri Las) was inherently histrionic (the Las also had "Leader of the Pack", Mark Dinning's "Teen Angel") etc. Much of the classic soul music was given to histrionic outbursts, often ruining some fabulous singing- eg Otis Redding's reading of "Try a Little Tenderness", James Brown's "Prisoner of Love"... actually, most of the genre
