Have never been a big fan of most generic "greatest hits" records but there are definitely some compilations that stand out.

    - Tom Petty, As mentioned above several times but I would specify the "American Treasure" discs. Outstanding collection, excellent fidelity and clearly put together with a lot of thought and love.

    - Beatles Red (62-66) or Beatles 1.

    - Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing, The Very Best Of Dire Straits - great collection, excellent (HDCD) fidelity.

    NY Decade

Los Lobos El Cancionero: Mas y Mas

Ry Cooder. The UFO Has Landed

    Merle Haggard: Down Every Road

Willie Nelson: One Hell Of A Ride

    BUT..

Eagles Greatest Hits is the best one because it's truly their greatest hits and you don't need another Eagles album to get the best...

Jackson 5 Greatest Hits for nostalgic reasons. Like Eagles... all you need from that group!

In addition to Decade, I'd add Dylan's Greatest Hit's Vol. 2, the Stones More Hot Rocks if for nothing else We Love You and the non US released r&b cuts. The 6 lp MCA box The Complete Buddy Holly, and finally the Eagles greatest hits makes for good target practice.

Ramonesmania is absolutely classic and my first introduction to what would quickly become my favorite band.

Also, some bands are better for their singles vs. the whole albums. In that category I place:

    Stone Temple Pilots “Thank You”
    Duran Duran “Greatest”
The Jesus and Mary Chain “21 Singles”

The Kinks Kronikles is a good compilation. Not really a greatest hits per se though.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

I agree with many of those already posted and would emphatically add Spirit and Dylan
