1973, my brother and I shared a Marquis (very low-end Strat-ish kinda thing), which we amplified by plugging it in to our Dad's Fisher stereo.

    Now? About 17 guitars and a half-dozen home-brewed amps.

First guitar was an Ovation 12 string.

First amp is a Gretsch/Valco Playboy.

Still have the amp but not the guitar.

Nowadays I have many guitars, the flavor of the week is my Danelectro U2 and a basterd modified Blues Jr. Amp.

Then: I had a early nineties MIJ Squire Strat in a metallic blue that I never should have parted with. I still have the Peavey Bravo I got back then and it's now my son's #1 amp.

Now: I have a '95 LP Studio in wine red. A '76 Fender Starcaster, burst. An American Deluxe Tele in butterscotch blonde. And, I got a recent American Special Strat in surf green to try and fill the hole in my heart that little Squire left... Amps are a Marshall Class 5, vintage silverface Vibrolux, and a Boogie V:25.

First electric was a 1960s - 1970s Japanese ES335 copy bought at a pawn shop in 1985. Purchased for the looks. Crate solid state amp.
Now my #1 is a Warmoth parts telecaster with a P90 in the neck, and a Ceriatone Champ Clone with a 12" Cannabis Rex.

Early 1990's Squier Strat into a Peavey Envoy 110.

Many, many guitars and amps later, I've got a Squier 51' and just ordered the same model Peavey Envoy.

    1979-Peavey T-60 into a little Yamaha G-5.

Many years later its a Tele/USACG neck/Bill Lawrence noiseless pickups into a MuchXS Vibrochamp or a Super Champ XD. Mostly its acoustic or bass these days though.

My first electric guitar was a Gibson Firebird (the 1 pickup model) I got new in 1964. My first amp was a Silvertone 1484 bought the same year. That amp was a loud 6L6 based beast, but actually sounded pretty crappy. When I sold it 6 months later and got a Fender Bandmaster head with its matching twin twelve cabinet, I was finally in tonal heaven.

Now I'm usually playing a Clapton Stratocaster through a Fender Tweed Twin RI, or a Road Worn Tele through a Mission 5e3 kit build.

First was a First Act single humbucker that came with a 5 watt First Act amp. Now I have a Squier Affinity Tele with an IRig modeling thingy and use my Gorilla GG-20 as a cab.

First electric was a 1976 Fender Stratocaster hardtail natural, with OHSC for $300 in 1994.

First amp was a mid 80's Peavey Stereo Chorus 400, also in '94.

Still have them both, but the amp will soon be replaced by a Peavey Classic 20 MH with 112C cab.

Don't need 130 watts and 60-70 pound combo anymore. Much rather have a 20, 5, or 1 watt 14 pound head and 35 pound cabinet. Amp has headphone out, speaker defeat, USB out with cabinet simulation, and real spring reverb. Only thing I'll be missing from the current amp is a chorus pedal (possibly a second 112C for true stereo chorus).

I was fortunate, I never has to struggle with any truly crappy guitars.

    1989:
First guitar was an acoustic, a 1986 Fender F250. Played and sounded better than its pedigree.
    Within a month, I had a 1980 G&L F100 and a early 70s Gibson G20 solid state amp.
I still have and use all three of these instruments...
Here's a pic of the original electric rig:

    Today:
Although I have several other guitars and amps (and have "horse-traded" quite a few others as well over the years), my main rig is a highly modified hecho-en-Mexico 1995 Fender Tele Special and a 1990 Fender '63-reissue Vibroverb amp.

First guitars were some small hofner and framus acoustics that were in the family, first electric was a "Pearl" Stratocaster copy and a guyatone amp – both crap and way overprized. Now I have some telecasters (e.g. an american standard my beloved wife gave me for christmas which now rivals with the 52RI for being #1) a blues jr. and a "custom" vibrolux amp. Life has been good to me.

1969 bought a Sears Silvertone 1482 combo amp and 1420L guitar.
I think both together were less than $100.
