There's the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, where I grew up.

Craig and Charlie Reid include references to it in a few of their songs, like The Streets of Edinburgh, but tonight I'll pick Sunshine on Leith

(Leith is the old port of Edinburgh.)

I went to see The Proclaimers play in Cork with my 14 year old son last month. The man next to us was inconsolable for the whole of this tune.

Then there's the city of Cork, Ireland, where I've lived the past 20 years. Local poet/songwriter John Spillane has written many beautiful songs about his home town. I love this one which combines a days-of-the-week structure with the views of a walk through the town.

Dougie MacLean's Caledonia isn't too shabby either, come to think of it

Being from the San Gabriel Valley section of L.A., these songs bring back high school dance memories.
I played in a Mexican wedding band for about a year when I was 14 and had been playing guitar for a year or two. We wore matching outfits and did "steps" while we played. There were 2 lead singers, 3 horn players, keyboards, bass, drums and guitar. Great fun.
    Let's take a trip, vato!

This was written by Frank Zappa and Ray Collins before they formed the Mothers:

Hmm, I think those songs are suspect because everyone I know from Minnesota tells me how much they love the change of seasons. I've always envied people from Diehard battery country for their seasonal changes. These days, however, it might be best to enjoy the winters while they last.

"I am a town in Carolina". Mary Chapin Carpenter perfectly captures my part of the world:

    I'll keep it super local

Sabine street bridge is a popular spot here in Houston. Walkers, joggers, bicyclists all frequent it.

I've posted about a local punk band here before, they wrote this love letter to the Houston we grew up with. Gentrification, growing up, growing old, all play into losing what you loved about your hometown.
I ride my bike down there from time to time and the song always creeps into my physche.(the song is about a bike ride through the old hood).

"Pre-fab condos replace the brick homes"
"Sabine street bridge with a purple sky, my favorite view of a dark skyline"
"Famous words from outer space define my city's changing face, have I lost my place"

Check it out, even if you don't like punk there a cool guitar break at 1:45.

It's not easy to slip "Winnipeg" or "Manitoba" into a song....
This one from Murray Mclauchlan describes the city and area pretty accurately in the springtime...

Although I live in Winnipeg now, I grew up in a smaller city to the east, Thunder Bay Ontario. This is Neil Young's homage to that city... where a chance meeting with Stephen Stills changed his life forever.

I know this is way off subject, but as soon as read a song that includes your state, first thing that jumps into my mind is...and man...I do really hate the song is "New York, New York" done by Frank Sinatra. Sorry...I get visions of some sort of pathetic kick line in cheap costumes going along with the horn section. Makes me want to jump off the Subway Platform on 7th ave line in front of the 3 Train..
