As a long time slide lover and sometime slide player, I dig hearing great players. Johnny Winter got me hooked on slide back in the late 60's, early 70's and that led me to search out his influences and discover some great, old players.

I was thinking of those I like and those I admire, but don't really care for as much as others do. One player who really knocks me out every time I hear him is Leroy Parnell. His note choice, phrasing, tone and the understated way he plays to enhance the song just hit the right buttons for me. I also think he fly's somewhat under the radar as a guitarist and fails to get the recognition (I believe) he deserves. Rick Vito and Kelly Jo Phelps are two others that sends shivers up me ol spine.

So, who are the sliders that put a smile on your face when you hear them?

In the rock arena, I love Mick Taylor and Duane Allman when they played slide. I know Mick Taylor often did it in standard tuning. Not sure about Duane Allman.

Mac Gaydon and Bryn Haworthare new to me. I'll check em out...thanks! Ry, Derrick and Duane are top notch and I too dig Mick Taylor. Great players! I've always loved Bonnie Raitts playing too.

Love that interview with Lowell George and rest of Little Feat. Thanks for linking that. Also shows the band's innate musicality. George for sure is a favorite slide player with a unique approach.

Love the sound of regular playing being interspersed with slide playing so big hands up for:

    Mark Knopfler
    Chris Rea
Mick Taylor ... et al ...

I don't think Sonny Landreth gets the credit he deserves. Derek Trucks is terrific as was Lowell George. I still think of him every time I wear a pair of overalls. :)
