I haven't done it since March 2006, but it was about 12-15 minutes over a mix of highway and side roads. Traffic was rarely a factor, as I was a shift worker and worked when sensible people were sleeping.

15 minute walk down to the train station at 6am, then an hour on the train with the rest of the zombies.

For me, it's three lanes each direction, busy urban traffic, almost the ENTIRE WAY.

I really have to be paying attention, that whole six minutes.

Good for you! I hope to join the ranks soon.
I also did the early start/600 miles a week gig to get to a job that I absolutely hated where everyone was treated like dirt.
I walked out and landed a much better job a couple miles from home.
I take the freeway to work but I go home on cool green back roads!

It really matters *what* is waiting for me at the end of my commute even more than the length of the drive. I have had long commutes to jobs I loved and didn't mind.
I've had jobs that sucked where I could walk to work.
    What a world!

Five days per week, I live and work in the little town. My commute to my teaching studio and 90% of my current gigs is eight miles from the shack.

On Tuesday mornings, I leave the little town and drive to the big town, which is 94 miles away. I stay with friends on Tuesday evenings, which is eighteen miles away from the music school that I teach at in the big town. Today is Wednesday, so it's 94 miles back to the little town after classes this evening.

2 mile drive or bicycle to Amtrak.
    30 minutes on the train.
3/4 mile walk or bicycle to my office.
Reverse to get home unless I leave work early and catch the bus.

Did you ever consider moving closer to your work during those years? I'm sure you could have found something more productive to do with an extra 5 hours a week. Like playing your guitar? I live 35 miles from my work only because my in laws gave us property to build on. Otherwise, we would have been within 5 miles.
I worked with this clown that drove 2 hours one way. When he told me that, I gave him the WTF? Why are doing that? I asked him don't you have something better to do with three hours a day? Not to mention the wear and tear on your car, tires, gas, bad weather and worse drivers?

45 minutes to an hour on two trains coming from bumblef$&@ Queens, going through Brooklyn into the city. It honestly took me longer to get to work downtown when I lived uptown in Spanish Harlem (same boro) than it does traversing three.

School for my kids and work for my wife, were only a few miles from my house.
And besides, my house was on a high ridge, right near the Maryland Appalachian Trail.
From my back deck, I could see for miles, all the way to the Pennsylvania line.

I HATED the commute, but I truly loved coming home to that old house.

20 miles of highway driving. I go in the opposite direction of the traffic, so it is usually a fairly easy commute. No complaints, except on nasty winter days when there are lots of knuckleheads and accidents.

About four minutes if the one stoplight is red. My apartment is really close to where I work.

7 miles across town. About 15 minutes at 5am going in to work; usually about 45 minutes getting home at 5pm.

I go to the office three days a week, and work from home two. Work from home is about 30 feet from my bed to my office.

Work days are 25 miles each way. Two miles to get through town, five miles up a state highway with only a few lights, 18 miles up a highway that normally flows at the speed limit, then a quarter mile once I get off the highway. 35 minutes, 30 on a good day, 40 when things are slow.

    I really cannot complain.
