Looking at my son, I said “Hey, your top’s bumched at the back.”

Then I turned, stood there at the kitchen counter, paused mid onion slice, trying to figure out why I felt uneasy, and what was my brain trying to tell me.

Then it hit me, what the heck did I just say?!!?

Interestingly, my son just responded with something like”Oh,” and straightened it.

For example I was sitting having dinner with Mrs K last week and I meant to ask her "Could you pass me the pepper please M'dear?"

I don’t know, so I’ll speculate and pass it off as reasonable, and conveniently distance myself from my own statement at the same time.

I suspect it really started as a reaction to grammarian protests against common typos / autocorrections. Whether those were fake or not alludes me.
