Wow, that IS creepy. And he's trying to be friendly. No wonder we all grew up with Clownophobia.

I wouldn't say I'm afraid of clowns, just have a desire to punch them in the face when I see them! No bad clown experiences that I remember. But yes avoid the Circus and anything that has Carnival(not cruise related) in the moniker. Next time I pay a visit to the psychiatrist I'll ask about it.

Why would someone's fear bug you? How could you think someone's fear makes them feel charmingly special? My bet is they don't feel that way at all.

It's actually a real thing, called "Coulrophobia", though the roots of the term are a bit in question:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coulrophobia
I do think that it's gotten kinda popular these days to take up some kind of 'quirk' to make yourself seem 'edgy' or 'unique', which would explain otherwise-rational people claiming such fears, but there are documented cases of people finding clowns to be disturbing or frightening to quite extreme degrees. We might be able to blame the "evil clown" trope that really started in the 1980's, but I dunno.

Personally, I'm OK with clowns as long as they're actually funny. And I love this:

I never really "got" clowns, but not afraid of them.

My wife and I have four kids. The two older ones were always afraid of clowns and people in those big costumes. They still are uncomfortable around people dressed up as such. It made going to Disney more interesting.

The two younger ones love them. That surprised me just as much.

You want to talk clowns? I was on a bus from Vancouver to Reno with a tour group of mimes from Quebec. Half the bus was mimes. It didn't get really super creepy until nightfall. Then they wanted to be sociable. Most only spoke French but it was an au courant Parisian inflected style that seemed arch to me. Eventually it was dark and people tried to sleep but they knew the guy across the aisle was doing "jazz hands" or "glass wall" a few feet away. So close he could touch you.

I remember as a kid going to the circus with my younger cousin. The clowns were running in and out of the audience, just generally scaring kids and adults, jumping at them and pretending to throw water etc.
Anyway they picked on my little 7 year old cousin John, and that was it he started punching and kicking this clown all over. The clown ran off with this crazed little 7 year old chasing him and hitting him, and John's mother in hot pursuit trying in vein to calm him down.
I saw John about 2 months back he's 46 now, but still can't remember why he turned like he did on the clown, although he says he must have deserved it lol! Anyway it was hilarious to watch at the time.

Those were the '50s and '60s version of kiddie amphetamine. A couple of bowls of that for breakfast and you'd be up 'til midnight working off the sugar high. :D

I hate baloons today as an adult because I was scared by a clown as a child.
