You can also sing "Amazing Grace" to "The Theme from Gilligan's Island."

    Try it sometime! Not kidding.

Interesting fact: John Newton, who wrote the words to "Amazing Grace," never heard it sung to the tune that we associate with it.

The one that Judy Collins had a hit record with.

The last time I saw Tommy at the Crystal Palace, he played a song he wrote in remembrance of John Wayne, I could be mistaken, but I think it was a drop D arrangement that was just so beautiful, it didn't seem possible that it could be coming from one instrument.

    1) Kansas City (I saw Wilbert Harrison -#1 Hit in 1959 - play it at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in the fall of 1970. He was on the bill with Credence Clearwater Revival and Booker T & The MGs).

    2) Ghost Riders In The Sky.

    3) Memphis (the Chuck Berry version).

    4) The Wayward Wind.

I was gonna say that, but you beat me to it (no pun intended, but it wouldn’t have been half bad).

I am still a Farmers fan. Jerry and the boys are still rocking on, almost went down to La Mesa to see them last Thursday night, but in the end couldn’t make it.

My brother had hired them some years back to play his 50th birthday party, but then Buddy up and died, so no show. My brother up and died not long after that. It was my brother that originally turned me on to them, he was a big fan.

Magnolia by J.J. Cale is a great campfire song. Two chords except for the bridge, which is only two chords. Yeah!

    Been there, done this.

Was at a house party one time. No one I knew, all acquaintances of my GF at the time. Bunch of people sitting around in the livingroom. Guy playing an acoustic. Everyone laughing and enjoying the music.

He gets bored after a few songs and says "anyone else want to play now". I didn't say anything as I figured I was the outsider... some one else will chime in. No one did, so I piped up. Guy hands me the guitar, I start to play. Don't even remember what. Within seconds everyone got up and went into the kitchen with the guy who was previously playing. Only one couple stayed in the room.

My GF stayed, of course, and she was a wonderful woman who enjoyed whatever I did. I might have been offended by everyone panning me, but she was incredibly beautiful and an amazing person. So, "I had that going for me, which was nice". Made me forget about being ignored.

If it's an electric - "Secret Agent Man" - instantly identifiable, and if there's anybody still left in the room by the time for the solo - it's one that can sound good without rhythm backup :)

On second thought, if you're really at a loss for something to play, just start tuning the G string up and down and up and down - and then tighten it until it breaks, scream like you've seen a ghost, drop the guitar, and run out of the room. Safe bet they'll NEVER ask you to "favor them with a song" ever again.

Eagles: that’s a dozen right there!
    Tom Petty: half a dozen
    James Taylor
    Tragically Hip ballads
    Blue Rodeo: there’s another dozen!
    Neil Young: another dozen
    Beatles: another dozen
    Clapton
    Joni Mitchell
    Linda Ronstadt
    Doobie Brothers

Yep, I love to play acoustic songs for a room full of happy, half in the bag people.

Nobody ever handed me a left handed guitar so I don’t worry about it.
If they did, I’d probably ask anyone who can sing to name a song. Otherwise, I’d play Mr Moto by the Belairs since I don’t sing.

Maybe try to get a sing along going with Glory Days or Under The Bridge.
