Earlier this year I went shopping for a Les Paul, and came home with a 2018 R8 AND a slightly used Victoria 20112-T. It has the older logo and came loaded with a REISSUE Jensen C12N dated to mid-2001. It sounded really good with the C12N, but I always plugged into my SFPR or my Marshall SV20h (attenuated) because the Vic was just too loud and “dark”, especially with my LP.

Fast forward a couple months and I’m starting to play the Vic more and more. I like what I’m hearing, but it’s still way too loud and it’s missing “something”. So, like all good GAS sufferers, I go looking for a “better” speaker. I bought a used Weber 12a125a that looked mint. Unfortunately it sounded WAY different than I was hoping. It was shrill on the top and flubby down low. It hurt my ears due to the frequencies it was putting out with both my Tele and LP. I moved it along pretty quick (made all my money back).

Then two weeks ago I bought an early Christmas present to myself. A new REISSUE Jensen C12Q. I played it right off with my LP, and did not enjoy what I heard. Lots of loose bass, piercing highs, too much mid. I pulled it and swapped in the WGS G12Q I have in my Musicmaster Bass Amp. I’ve swapped the G12Q into the Vic several times. I LOVE it in my MMBA. I like it in the 5e3.

A/Bing the WGS and Jensen Qs today they are very similar, but the WGS is more “Hi-Fi”, and a little more scooped. The more I listened to the WGS, the more I liked it, but there was a certain “character” to the Jensen that is hard to put a finger on. I really like them both with my Tele, but the tone from the LP was overpowering, muddy, boomy, not what I like.

Then I started to twist the tone and volume knobs on my LP. Mind…Blown…🤯🤯🤯!

For anyone saying that 5e3’s don’t like humbuckers, I would encourage them to roll back their volume and tone knobs a bit (50’s LP wiring probably helps). Now both speakers sound GREAT, and I can get the clean, warm, crunchy tone I’m looking for out of this amp with my LP. I’m not sure which speaker I’ll keep in here, but either one will be just fine because I have finally discovered why guitars have volume and tone knobs!

But, GAS is real so…

Where do you run the volumes and tone on that amp?
With my LP I’m plugging into bright input #2. Tone on 8, Volume 1 on about 2.75, volume 2 on 4. But sometimes I’ll turn volume 1 to 8, and volume 2 to 10-11. LP volumes on 6-7, tone controls from 4-10.

With my Tele, pretty much the same, but I plug into volume 1, and back the tone knob down to 7. Tele volume and tone from 1/2 to wide open.

ommv…but I never turn a 5E3 on if I am not going to run the volume above halfway. I run the tone up the dial, too. Bright channel input. I f8nd that with the Normal channel then set at 8..+/- 2…that I get a nice rich sonic….and I can push the output on the guitar to 10 if wanted. I expect the amp to yield distortion with the guitar output maxsee….unless I pick very lightly. I use a treble bypass circuit on my guitar so that the guitar’s output is tonally consistent throughout the sweep of the pot. The Gibson ‘50s circuit accomplishes somewhat the same, but I prefer a TBC…or a linear volume pot on the guitar. Gibson s tarted using linear volume pots in the early ‘70s. fender started using a TBC on Teles when they introduced the modern control circuit circa 1968. The best speaker I have heard 8n a 5E3 was a vintage P12P.

I live in a duplex, and play in my garage so I keep the volume down. When I plug into my Ox Box and attenuate it I set mine very similar to yours.

I’m finding the speaker rabbit hole is a deep, dark, expensive place to travel. I have thought about a reissue P12Q, and trying to just beat the hell out of it to break it in. I’m one of those who like the reissues, especially once they get 100+ hours on them.

Hi Lowspeid!

That IS the truth ;)

Not a bad idea at all!
I happen to own an older ´57 Deluxe RI with the stock P12Q and I quite like it!
So far I compared it to a vintage C12Q, a newer WGS G12Q and various Celestions (M, L and S models). None of those made me want to change out the P12Q 👍

cheers - 68.

I have the G12Q in there right now, and it sounds really good. The reissue C12Q is less “open” than the G12Q, but has nicer lows to my ears. How would you compare the G12Q and the P12Q tonally?

If you like the G12Q, you might as well leave it in there - especially if you don't use the amp to play out.
The P12Q sounds a tad fuller/bigger to me - without lacking any high end.
I can hear where Wally is coming from (muddled midrange...), but I still prefer the P12Q over the others I've tried.
In comparison, the vintage C12Q is clearer, more articulate in the midrange, but I didn't think it suited the amp any better...

cheers - 68.

P12Q RI compress more under the power 5E3 produce and it stay airy, articulate and shimmering 3D but I build Deluxes using smaller coupling capacitors and lows do not flub too much.

WGS G12Q just sound great, organic and rawer almost straight out of box but can't take my 5E3 full power as well as P12Q. C12Q RI sound similar and as good but require longer breaking in.

There are few good youtube samples of G12Q. Crunch played gold top LP and cleans played cream Tele definitely worth searching. Also few comparisons where P12Q RI is against other speakers.

If you can find a used Emi alnico Legend 12 (sold as mojo and various other brands at some point) it's great but very efficient. Using the unused channel volume to which reduces input gain helps a lot - I can't remember if the Victoria is charged to suit a 12AX7 like some Tweed Deluxe clones but normally a lower gain tube tames the flub and harsh oversensitive tone knob.

Hi guys!

I didn't think of it, but I have a recording online with my ´57 Deluxe RI and the P12Q - clean and dirty:

Thanks for sharing! That sounded great (both the amp and your playing)!
