Earlier this year I went shopping for a Les Paul, and came home with a 2018 R8 AND a slightly used Victoria 20112-T. It has the older logo and came loaded with a REISSUE Jensen C12N dated to mid-2001. It sounded really good with the C12N, but I always plugged into my SFPR or my Marshall SV20h (attenuated) because the Vic was just too loud and “dark”, especially with my LP.
Fast forward a couple months and I’m starting to play the Vic more and more. I like what I’m hearing, but it’s still way too loud and it’s missing “something”. So, like all good GAS sufferers, I go looking for a “better” speaker. I bought a used Weber 12a125a that looked mint. Unfortunately it sounded WAY different than I was hoping. It was shrill on the top and flubby down low. It hurt my ears due to the frequencies it was putting out with both my Tele and LP. I moved it along pretty quick (made all my money back).
Then two weeks ago I bought an early Christmas present to myself. A new REISSUE Jensen C12Q. I played it right off with my LP, and did not enjoy what I heard. Lots of loose bass, piercing highs, too much mid. I pulled it and swapped in the WGS G12Q I have in my Musicmaster Bass Amp. I’ve swapped the G12Q into the Vic several times. I LOVE it in my MMBA. I like it in the 5e3.
A/Bing the WGS and Jensen Qs today they are very similar, but the WGS is more “Hi-Fi”, and a little more scooped. The more I listened to the WGS, the more I liked it, but there was a certain “character” to the Jensen that is hard to put a finger on. I really like them both with my Tele, but the tone from the LP was overpowering, muddy, boomy, not what I like.
Then I started to twist the tone and volume knobs on my LP. Mind…Blown…

!
For anyone saying that 5e3’s don’t like humbuckers, I would encourage them to roll back their volume and tone knobs a bit (50’s LP wiring probably helps). Now both speakers sound GREAT, and I can get the clean, warm, crunchy tone I’m looking for out of this amp with my LP. I’m not sure which speaker I’ll keep in here, but either one will be just fine because I have finally discovered why guitars have volume and tone knobs!
But, GAS is real so…
