I was at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe in Florida in 2010, doing a guitar show there with J. Backlund Designs. I left the booth and was walking to the food court for some lunch, stopped for a 'Oh, what the Hell' moment at a 25 cent slot machine in the casino, put in a dollar, and on the third pull, hit it for $1000. I just walked to the teller, got ten $100's, put them in my pocket and went and had my lunch. I didn't say one word about it to anyone (except in a later phone call to my wife back home).

My few excursions into gambling territory was buying a guitar online I knew was risky & prob couldn't afford (at the time). The day I made the purchase I was out cycling one of my regular routes & stopped at the market where I would occasionally buy a weekly Lotto ticket. When I was putting the ticket away I noticed I still had the last ticket I'd bought months earlier. I'd contemplated tossing that ticket actually. I fed it into the machine & found it was a winner. Paid for the guitar.

I'm confused as to how the odds favor the house. You don't play against the house in poker. You play against other players, and if you win, you win their money. The house just deals the cards, determines who won, and takes a cut out of each pot. They don't have a stake in the game.

In the 80's, I had a friend who was a poker player. He'd go to Vegas and win around a grand almost every time he went. He loved playing against tourists. He said they came with the mindset that they had a set amount of money they could afford to lose, and they just wanted to play cards. He said you could hardly get one to fold. He was exaggerating of course, but he won a lot of money. When he got out of the Navy, he moved there and I lost touch with him.

I think you should listen to your wife and give it a shot, you might surprise yourself.

I picked a superfecta (first 4 horses in order)at the race track once. Turned a $2 bet into $385.

I still remember their numbers, 6,2,3,1 because those were the last 4 digits of my future wife's phone number, whom I would meet a couple of weeks later.

If you’re hiding your counting so well that the casino won’t notice you counting, then your game isn’t strong enough for them to worry about. If you’re not getting backed off, you’re not a good card counter.

I used to be on a high-stakes team. I can’t play blackjack in the major casinos in Vegas or Mississippi under my real name or a few other fake ones. Last I heard, I’m in “the book.” ;-)

Years ago when our casino first opened we would once a month. I’d take $100.00 and Jackie had $50.00
She’d play the slots and I played blackjack. We would get free drinks, listen to the music, hang with each other at our respective games and had fun. At some point we’d head home, either with a few dollars or nothing. It paid for an evenings entertainment. We went for fun not necessarily to win

Jump ahead several months, Jackie’s off island, and I head to the casino with my $100.00. 2 hours later I’m $1,400.00 up and ready to go home. The line at the only open cashier window was more than I wanted to mess with so pocketed my chips and went home. Instead of going back to cash in my winnings I put the chips on a shelf and when we went to play I took $100.00 in chips. I played with “their” money for over a year. Cashing in my winnings when I did.

To me it was the cost of entertainment not gambling, per se. We still go occasionally but the music starts after 10:00 and we’re getting too old to want to stay out til 1:00AM or later. Now it’s get there around 8:00 and leave by 10:00. Still good entertainment

I had a little luck with video poker in Vegas. I was sitting at a bar back in '87 and the place had those video poker games built into the bar. I put a few coins in but nothing happened so I reached under the bar to the coin return and found $21 worth of quarters lol. I turned it into $85 somehow (not a poker player, just got lucky), took my money and went back to the hotel.

I don’t gamble because I am terrible at it. When I was young my friends and I would go to the racetrack sometimes. I would bet the favorite to show, and lose. In Vegas once I played the $1 slot machines. I gave myself a $20 allowance and figured I would play until the $20 was gone. Took about 90 seconds.

Spent $80 in my life at casinos spread over 3 visits. Was visiting with a date burning time the first visit . First visit toon almost 2 hours to lose $20.
Second time was years later in the Bahamas , wife and I visited and twice we hit slots in the casino over 2 nights we played about 7 hours to lose it all and figured it was a fair exchange of time for entertainment.
    Buy an occasional lottery ticket

When I lived in Vegas, the bass player of our band was pretty good at poker.

Managed to rack up $40,000 in debt at the age of 24.

I used to live right close to Foxwoods. I’ve never enjoyed gambling (or “gaming” as they call it), but we would periodically make a visit for a restaurant or show. One thing I would always notice was the level of despair in all the gamblers faces as they played whichever game they were on. All the commercials they show on TV show all the people whoopin and hollerin having so much fun, but I never once witnessed that.
