If this is in the wrong forum, I hope a mod will help out and move it to the right one. I went through the list and didn't see an obvious place for a discussion of PA gear. (If I'm just blind and missed it, sorry 'bout that!)

Yesterday, I found a Yamaha EMX88S mixer for sale on Craigslist. I was attracted to it, because it's a Yamaha, which is a reputable brand, it has 400w per side power amps, it's in excellent condition, and the price was (I think!) reasonable. I'd like to ask any of y'all who might have experience with this particular head (or mixing active and passive speakers in a PA system -- read on for more on that) to chime and let me know how you think I did...

As I said, I *think* I did OK on the price: I paid $200, including two 20ft Speakon cables. The unit is in great shape with just few scratches on the edges of the housing from being loaded in and out of cars. I tested it and it works fine. My primary purpose in buying it was that, while I have active PA mains, my monitors are all passive (legacy from a previous PA setup). My home studio setup uses the mains alone, which is fine. But to play out, I can't use the passive monitors. With this head, I can build kind of a hybrid system, using the line outs on the front to feed the mains and the speaker connections on the back to run the monitors. At least, that's the plan. If I'm going down a wrong road, please -- LET ME KNOW!

It seems Yamaha made this head for a long time. I haven't really found any bad reviews, which has to be a good thing. But, I always fret about spending money and worry about paying too much. For this head in excellent, cared-for condition, do you think I did all right at $200? (It doesn't need to have been a "deal"; I just don't want to think I overpaid.) My thinking was that an active monitor would cost me more than $200, so this was another way to go to accomplish my goal.

I'd like to know what you all think. Did I do well? Am I on the right track? Am I nuts? (Well, that might be a different discussion!) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

N.B. Here's the actual ad for the one I bought -- Pictures~!

That is a GREAT head for $200. I had the previous version. I beat it to death gigging it for nearly ten years. Then I sold it to another band. They’re still using it. I sold it to them in 2011.

Yamaha PA stuff is bullet proof. When I was looking for a passive mixer to run my new powers mains three years ago, I bought another Yamaha. You just can’t miss with their stuff, IMO. And to get two cables with it? You basically get the head for $100. Score.

edit: I looked at the ad. That’s the same one I had.

Cool -- Thanks!

I used to have pretty much your same setup, 2 powered mains and non-powered monitors, worked great! Very lightweight power.

Why? Not enough juice?

My duo partner and I currently use a Carvin that’s 400 per side. It does the job, for sure. Would the Yamaha be any different?
For a duo it would be fine. I’d be concerned with a bass or drums added.

I picked up a Yamaha EMX86 a couple of years ago for $50 CAD. Channel 2 XLR input was "pooched" but everything else worked fine. I bought it to use at rehearsals and as a backup at gigs. On a couple of occasions, we've also used it as our main PA./monitor amp as it has the capability to split the two internal amps. Damn bulletproof as well as loud and clean. In the past I used to own another Yamaha powered mixer from the '70s. Last year I gave it to a friend of mine who was starting to jam with his kids in the basement and was looking for something. Still worked great except for the reverb. Not bad for a 45 year old amp. Yamaha makes awesome stuff.

That sounds like a super deal, and you'll have lots of routing options with it. Congratulations.

There are a LOT of different ways to utilize a powered head in a live setup. I had a Peavey XR600F that I used as a standalone for small gigs; if I needed more channels I took my 12-channel passive board and used the separate power amps on the Peavey for mains and monitors. If I needed more power, back in that day I had a rack power amp that I used for mains, and I could run two monitor mixes off the Peavey if I wanted to. It wasn't a lot of wattage, but it was a lot of coverage--and we had a full five-piece country/gospel band.

We only run two A/E guitars, two vocal mics, and a PC running MIDI tracks through the PA. So, this head is even more than we really need. I'm confident it can do the job, especially after reading other users' responses in this thread.

And, the 400w is only for the monitors. The mains are 1200w QSC 12s. So, I'm pretty sure we'll be fine!

Good find. I also have a Yamaha EMX powered mixer - not the same model as yours - that has been used hundreds of times for many years without a single problem. You should get lots of use out of that one.
