I was attempting to lightly steel wool my rough rosewood fretboard on my LP. I'd taped up the pickups to prevent any fine steel wool particles getting into the magnets. I even had a can of "duster spray" to blow away metal particles.

Well, my "duster spray" was actually "good stuff" spray foam that I neatly sprayed all over my headstock and 1st fret. I'm posting this so that no one ever makes this mistake and maybe you get a chuckle out of my stupidity. Why do I even bother I am clearly not a guitar tech....

Yep, happens. We had someone at our house put bleach into an empty Resolve carpet cleaner spray bottle. Genius.

Let us know what you find out in the process of trying to remove it.

Well, after I finished punching myself in the face I immediately started wiping it off with a T-shirt and it seems to have all come off of my Gibby without any damage to the finish as far as I can tell. Strangely, the fretboard at the 1st fret is incredibly smooth;)!

Glad to hear it didn't eat up the finish!

I would assume that stuff has SERIOUS solvents in it that gas off fast to le the stuff harden.
Amazing it didn't kill the finish.
    Lucky you!

Well at least taping the pickups kept the foam off too!

I had a can of that stuff blow out its seam on a hot day,
next to the wall where I hang all my cable.
I wasn't in the shop when it happened.

I am still picking stuff off.

When spray deodorants were popular many years ago, my roommate mistakenly shot his underarms with men's hairspray.
Glad you guys don't work in a pharmacy.

Yeah, well, I brushed my teeth with this for about a week until my dad started to wonder where his shaving cream was going. Tasted pretty good, to me!

Scotchbrite, micro mesh, 1000 grit paper... anything but steel wool.

OK, thanks for the pointers, folks. I'll put the steel wool away, far away. With the spray foam and the Visine bottle I conveniently recycled to hold bleach.

Brass 0000 wool is your friend. No taping pups to keep steel from sticking to them.

Did the same: walked into my sisters bedroom and swiped her spray deodorant, but didn't notice it was hairspray until that first blast. Damn, that stung!

Glad the guitar came out OK.
