It's funny you'd ask this question! I had the experience..."experience?" of watching a "Tone King" video for the first time the other day. I maybe got 4 minutes into it. I was suffering from a sinus infection, so I was impaired, so don't judge me too harshly. It seemed like a bunch of pseudo-playing by a guy who hadn't learned anything on guitar since he was about 17 years old and had started playing at 15. I don't mean to sound judgey, but I guess I am. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I surely don't want to run into him at a music store.

The other guy, McKnight, I don't think I'd care to run into anywhere, either.

I live in a town where I once looked up in traffic and realized Redd Volkaert was driving behind me in his Honda CRV. I saw Chris Layton sitting across from me at the Whole Foods eating tacos once. I generally don't talk to famous people unless I have a real reason to. I think it's cute a few bedroom warriors somehow managed to cobble together some internet "fame" for a few minutes jacking around with guitars, but I don't want to interact with them. I figure the odds are pretty high that I won't, since I don't live on the east coast or frequent combination cannoli/guitar shops!

I’ve only heard Tone King play once and his tone was not king but it was one time so I’ll let him have a pass. I think he’s probably stuck in 1984.

I ran into many guys like PM and TK when I worked at music stores.
Passionate gear junkies are more common than you might imagine.
I’m an old gear nerd myself.
Generally gear junkies make me tired.
Now, though I totally cop to being one, I never preach.
I don’t want to be a bore/boor.
I have found that most gear obsessed guys aren’t nearly as passionate about their playing.
They’re just constantly seeking their perfect tone, man.
Tedious.

I did a short stint as a tone chaser but grew out of it pretty quickly. I don't have the patience or a discerning-enough ear for that particular obsession. I enjoy McKnight's videos when he talks about the guitar industry or about guitar repairing and modding. The Tone King strikes me as someone I'd avoid at a party, but I'd happily find a quiet corner to chat with McKnight.

Where is the option for "Metal Zone"?

I bet they're both pretty nice in person. All these guys play a character to some extent on Youtube.

I don't find either of their videos all that educational.. I'm getting pretty bored of the gear vids. Just give me Andy from Reverb, who doesn't really talk. Or Shnobel, who doesn't really talk. Just "I'm playing a Fender Strat into a Vox AC30 + this pedal" and done talking.

But mostly I'd rather watch the guys who actually try to teach something theory-ish and do it pretty concisely.

Phil McKnight is alright. He's done a lot of repair work, so he's got some technical knowledge, but I'm surprised at how often I hear him get things wrong... and his frequent mispronunciations do get a little annoying, but I don't think he deserves all the shade that gets thrown on him. I think he's just an average Joe trying to make a living with something he loves. I don't watch much of his videos anymore, but sometimes I'll play one of his Q&A livestreams in the background while I'm working on guitars, if he's talking about something I'm interested in, but otherwise, I pass.

I've never warmed up to the Tone King... I'm not sure what he brings to the table, other than being a guy who buys and owns a lot of gear. I don't think I've ever heard him play, and I've never made it through an entire video.

I don't know how he got to be king... I didn't vote for him.

I don't see knowledge or likeability as a contest. I wouldn't mind running into either one of them and I'd listen for as long as I could stand it - I might learn something. And believe me, I hope that I'm always learning - because there's plenty of room...

Even though I've been playing a long time, I hope to never consider myself an expert. I've seen a lot of stuff come and go and there's so much out there, that there are very few, if any, who have truly encyclopedic knowledge. Then the weight of all that knowledge, it's just another big old burden, no?

I'd rather play.

I like hearing other peoples take on stuff, up to a point. GC is ok, I met some interesting people and some that were not. Most def, I don't go there to meet people.

I actually think the reason some people don't like either of these guys is their presentation leads people to believe that they do see themselves as experts.

Some of the guys we all seem to near universally love never seem to come off pretty humble:

- Pete Thorn
- PGS/Reverb Andy
- Marty Schwarz
- Justin Guitar

I think some of the guys mentioned in this thread negatively come off as less humble.

Since a lot of boyz and girlz don’t know who Tone King is or haven’t heard him play I’ll share this bad boy right here.

Rick Beato, and the Doug & Pat Show.

It would be fun to sit down and have some BBQ and a beer with Greg Koch and Phil Xenedis.

Andy? Mmmkay, you asked for it.

Hey! Watch it!!

Andy’s song selection is what sets him ahead of the pack IMO. Pete Thorn (@sinasl in TGP) is cool too. He makes THE DIGITAL sound amazing...
