Would you approve the US joining the metric system? (meters, celsius, etc..)

Whenever I see this I think of the ancient Egyptians - they built the pyramids with cubits.

I love ancient history like the moon landings. It's nice to rest on your laurels for centuries after your civilisation crumbles haha.

I do both (metric and inch) but I think in inches and feet. Conversions are easy...and meters vs yards are very close to one another. I have a mental "mile" but not a mental "kilometer"...however I learned years ago that a kilometer is approx. 5/8 of a mile.

I went thru "metrification" here in the 70's. All the speed-limit signs were doubled, one imperial, one metric. So many were stolen, shot or just torn down that they eventually gave up.

When I visited Scotland back in the 90s, I assumed all the speed limit signs were metric...so I was out on the road doing 50kph and traffic was whizzing by me...it was posted in mph but the sign just said "50" so...

I find it funny that 1 inch = exactly 25.4mm. No more decimal points are needed, one is sufficient. I memorized the 1mm conversion factor (0.03937) until my brother pointed out that using 25.4 was more accurate. Duh!

    Kilograms aren't too hard, there's 2.2lbs in every kg...but Newton-meters? Yikes!

I'll stick with my Whitworth tools. I got 'em in an old MG mechanic's estate sale.

I would make one change: Change inches to be a tenth of a foot (keeping the actual length of a foot the same). Leave the rest alone.

    Same with temperature measurement.

I lived in Phoenix for a while so I know what, say, 115F feels like. I also lived in Montreal, so I know what -15C feels like.

    In between I have to do mental arithmetic based on 10C = 50F and 20C = 68F.

So, how about we just bring back Whitworth?

Wouldn't that complicate calculations involving arcs and time?

But maybe we can finally solve leap years.

I’d support it just so that my fellow Americans would have something different to complain about for a little while.

Yeah, you guys really missed the boat on that one. Going to the moon instead of going metric.
    Anyways, NASA is converting

Sure, with the caveat that corporate America would not be allowed to use the conversion to take MORE of my hard earned $$ than they already get.

It's kind of a funny conversation. Those of us who need the metric system have already been using it forever. The cost of abolishing the english system would be incredible just to make a few people happy. And because the rest of the world is metric, really? The rest of the world aren't Americans!

And Liberians - the only other non-metric country I believe.

Hey you could start the non-metric club! The first rule of the non-metric club is you don't talk about the non-metric club lol
