Like a lot of you, I have a bunch of guitars hanging where I can play them regularly. The room is on the smaller side, 10'x10', and there is only one light fixture in the center of the ceiling, where it's been since the house was built in 1968. I'd like to add lighting to the room, especially to highlight the guitars, but want it to fit in with the midcentury modern look and feel of the house.

Here's the corner in question:

Cool room! Good lighting can transform a room and I think it’s an important aspect of room enjoyment. Designers will treat it as a layered approach just like music.

I’d start with putting the overhead fixture on a dimmer if it isn’t already. Overhead is necessary, but can be uninviting, especially at night and dimmers help create ambiance. Do you have any tables in the room? Look a desk lamp and maybe a task lamp that fit your style. Accenting the guitars could be more involved depending on how far you want to take it. Maybe some up lights would work well without running new wiring and fixtures.

Start with a three head floor lamp you can swivel the heads on.
Easy to remove if you don't like it.
Adding more ceiling fixtures gets expensive, though track lighting could replace the feed to the one fixture in place now.

I've got these for soft indirect lighting.
Super cheap from Amazon.

WOBANE Under Cabinet Lighting Kit,Flexible LED Strip Lights Bar,Under Counter Lights for Kitchen,Cupboard,Desk,Monitor Back,Shelf,6.6 Feet Tape Light Set,ETL Listed,120 LEDs,1100lm,2700K WarmWhite

Not sure if you can use them. I put them on top of cabinets and bounce light off the ceiling.
Then you use a floor lamp or something for task lighting. Several years now and no issues.

Before replacing or adding new fixtures try replacing the lightbulb in the ceiling fixture with a smart LED bulb. I installed the Phillips HUE bulbs which are controlled via my WiFi. Color, brightness and strobe effects are all managed by a phone app or if you have a SIRI device you can control everything by voice. It’s the single hi-tech device in my home that actually works and works well. I think it would be perfect for a small music room.

With white walls it would be hard to get rid of the Doctor office aura going on.
Could try lessening wattage in lighting and perhaps get those stick on
pointy led they have for under counter top. Have fun with it.
