This is the only case I can think of where a successful musician, whose album sales were solid and had an enthusiastic fan base, was ruined by one video. When the single came out, it did well; the album was doing well, and the tour was doing well. The video was released during the tour, and he noticed that he was suddenly playing to half-filled arenas when all the concerts up until that time had been full.

I don't think Billy Squier dances anything like Jerry Lewis. Do you?

I dont get it. This isnt any worse than any other dreck that came out on mtv that made me want to shoot my tv at the time. Dexis midnight runners? Der kommisar? Boy George? MTV was there to destroy music, especially rock. And they did a pretty good job. Billy was just part of it. Zztop even had synths. Come on! MTV has since moved on to bigger targets and now is programming to destroy all of western civilization.

True. I saw him open for Foreigner in support of his first album, and he put on a great show.

There is a video of this on YouTube that someone posted. I believe its tagged No Audio...
It does have an added audio track of a guy imitating what he thinks Billy sounded like recording the video.
    Its hilarious!

I cant post it from my phone,

Cocaine's a helluva drug. The silliness--the combination of heavy riffs and dramatic lighting and Billy writhing on satin sheets and dramatically tearing his shirt off for no reason, then putting two shirts on, the improvised choreography--just silly. Lots of silliness in the 80s--the Bowie/Jagger dancing in the streets is equally bad., with an equal sense that everybody involved had snorted up a case of overconfidence and bad judgement

I think it’s the fact that no-one else is there for most of the video as he gets dressed and writhes around all by himself. Unintentional I know but it makes the whole thing look like an act of ‘self love’.

It has to do with Billy's established audience prior to the video. Billy was stadium rock at the time... Camero driving, cigarette smoking, denim blue jean jacket wearing, rockers. The same guy that listened to The Stroke or Lonely is the Night... suddenly found himself in thrown into the same crowd that listened to the pop stuff you mentioned... Madonna and Boy George. It was a sight to their manhood, regardless of the quality of the music.

I watched it with the sound on. It sounds kind of like a Freddie Mercury impersonation.

I remember when the video came out (so to speak), it just about ended his career.
