I'm surprised to hear all the talk about JC-120s. Those are big, powerful clean amps that sound great clean and take pedals like a champ. I think I could make almost any guitar sound decent into one of those. I've seen shows with players taking various guitars into a distortion pedals into JC-120s where they blew the marshalls off the stage. Only reason I can think of that a player would sound bad with that amp is because they can't hear the stage from their hospital bed after putting their back out trying to lift the thing.

No such thing. Every combination has its own merits. Someone may find a certain combination useful for their expression. Keep an open mind and you will find your voice.

Any guitar I owned into a Carvin 212 Bel Air
This is an amp I used to read about in the back pages of Guitar Player magazine for many years really wanted one and when I finally had the money to buy one it was a huge disappointment despite everything on paper two 12, 50 Watts tube overdrive Channel Reverb it sounded terrible
It was spiky and harsh it may have been the speaker but what a letdown sorry for the voice activation

I owned one. Sounded good on it’s own, but couldn’t be heard in a band situation. Soldano HR-50 ate it’s lunch and stole it’s milk money.

My visors think band. I had a LP Studio into a 212 Crate solid state with some horrible effects unit. My buddy had an Ibanez Iceman into a 212 Laney solid state with a horrible effects unit. Neither one of us knew what tone was.

Any electric guitar into a good amp is a good combination. Any electric guitar into a bad amp is a bad combination.

Well, admittedly, that amp is over-the-top in many different ways. There isn't a ton of clean headroom in the pre-amp, and though the distortion is supposed to get its tone from overdriving the CMOS stage, it still has enough gain to start crashing into the op-amps voltage threshold, which doesn't sound as good. Mustangs and their ilk are short-scale, right? Maybe that affects how you play and maybe even the tone. So yeah, I can see your point.

I usually find that the player is more responsible in the creation of bad guitar sounds. A poor craftsman always blames their tools after all.

As a long term Hiwatt fanatic, one can always turn down the treble & presence controls when using Hiwatt amps. Avoiding the bright input is also a good idea when using brighter guitars. If you dial in a Mesa Mk II or III properly, it will work wonders for those anemic Rickenbacker pickups. Perhaps you're hooked on using a Rickenbacker 12 string with a Vox AC-30 or something similar. Granted that can be a fantastic sound. As an aside, Roger McGuinn tracked his guitar parts with The Byrds going straight to the recording console into a Fairchild compressor into a Pultec limiter to tape. No amps.

Robby Krieger always sounded good live through his Acoustic 260 model. He even used the "tuner" pitch as a faux theremin live.

I thought I heard Kurt Cobain used (and routinely trashed) those Sunn Betas; and played a Mustang (cheap garage sale finds at the time). Not sure if at the same time...

A Kalamazoo EBO bass through a 25 watt Paris Bass Boom amp--inch for inch and watt for watt possibly the worst solid state amp ever manufactured. I was suckered into buying it in 1969.
