    Hello everyone,

I was wondering which would be the worst guitar and amp combination.

How about a Gibson Byrdland with an Engl Metalmaster?

    What do you think?

I have to ask; worst in who's opinion? Anything can be made to work. Seems like guitar players are stuck in tradition. IMO it kills creativity.

I would think the worst guitar-amp combination would be a strat into a thin, flat solid state amp like a JC-120. Strats are so thin and weak sounding already. But Adrian Belew in his Talking Heads days made that combination sound amazing.

I think it's always important to be creative and to try unusual combinations.

Perhaps you can also get a nice sound with an Ibanez Gio through an original Fender Bassman from 1959 (even though IMHO it would a bit strange)

I just want to hear your opinions

A Fender Mustang modeling amp and any other guitar. Bought a Mustang (12” speaker combo) to have an amp at my son’s home in another state.

Thought that it would be good because no pedals required. Turned it that I really could not easily get many tones out of that amp that that I liked.

80s HSS charvel into a SS crate. It literally gave me a migraine.
Only tried it because a drummer wanted to jam, and we were at my dads house. Didn't feel like going upstairs to get the HRdlx, and regretted it until the headache went away.

Gotta say, I've gotten useable sounds from bleh guitars into mediocre amps (squier affinity into peavey classic chorus) and junk guitars into ok amps (bronze series warlock into HRdlx). But some amps (especially anything SS by crate, and any SS amp I've never heard of) couldn't make a good sound if you plugged a cd player into it, let alone a guitar.

Is this observation from personal experience? Because that combo sounds like it wouldn't be half bad...

How about any guitar with low-output pickups, like lipstick tubes or under-wound Strat pickups into a high-gain mid-forward amp like a JCM 900?
Or hot pickups like a Dimarzio Super Distortion into a Roland JC-120?

I had a Crate "mini stack" something-or-other (EDIT: G200C XL) from '89 or so that 19-year-old me with an under-powered '83 Bullet S-3 thought sounded like the Iron Gates to Metal Paradise. When I compared it to a friends little 15-or-20-watt Marshall, it sounded like vigorously shaking a sack of marbles. I've played much better SS amps since then, can't believe I thought that tone was so great.

A really good player used a little Gorilla amp on small club dates around here back in the day. Had great tone.

A Kramer Ferrington into a solid-state Marshall Mini-Stack…an old bandmate was convinced this would be his ticket to stardom in the late 80’s

Of course, that guitar sounded like crap, acoustically or amplified…and that amp was a sad excuse for music amplification in any form.

It's a bland sounding guitar and really needs a powerful tone stack and some gain.

I remember when the Sunn Beta series was new, and I recall having some difficulty getting a clean, or driven sound I liked.
Admittedly, it was over 40 years ago.
I just could never wrangle a Mustang, Duo Sonic, or Jaguar.
    Some guys manage just fine.
    YRMV, of course.

Rickenbacker 12 string into a Hiwatt or Mesa Boogie. I love my Ric but it does not distort very well at all. However, a Ric 6 string into a Marshall is quite pleasant.
