Who you got? Name the ugliest band that ever existed and the best looking band that ever existed.

Ugliest:

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Interesting responses already.

Notice how all the ugliest bands come from the '70s. Long uncombed hair and ill-conceived facial hair was certainly not a good look.

All bands before MTV were ugly..
That's a very astute statement.

You are correct. Oh, there are some exceptions (that band Thirty Eight Special was an MTV band and they were god awful ugly), but, yes, MTV definitely upped the game for all bands in the looks department. Band had to be photogenic or they did not get ample airplay.

This is so true. MTV changed things forever. Imagery over content.
back in the 70s, my parents took us kids to a dinner and a show place on the route going out of town

while we ate shrimp cocktails (a once a month treat), I heard the thumping of a really good band in the showroom

it was these guys:

(RIP Maurice White)

they had style, but they got where they got to not because they were photogenic, but because they were GOOD

OK, let's get this out of the way now.
Regarding The Bangles:

Come on, three of those girls were as ugly as my Joe Strummer Telecaster. However, the fourth member of the band - and you know who I am talking about - was sooooo good looking that she actually elevated the entire band into the good looking department. To be honest, did any of us actually even look at the other three when a video of theirs was on MTV?

I couldn’t find this on the Intrawebs, so I had to photograph my album cover. Forgive the photo quality of my submission:

Best looking? I came of age in the 80s. So many options. This one’s as good as any:

I remember loving “Shout at the Devil.” Then I rushed out to buy “Theater of Pain.” I remember looking at the album cover and its spandex, thinking “WTF?!?”

Little did I know that was what was in store for the rest of the decade...

plus one on the MTV comments - w/ the band Heart as one of the unfortunate victims

fortunately, they had/have actual content behind the hair-spray, lipstick & bustiers
<would go further, but that could go into thread-lock territory>
