Well...some genius a few pages back suggested a suggestion which, if enacted, would have avoided today's double-confusion and delay in the 1st half of CRO x BEL about the possible PK whistle
(against Belgium)
which, after minutes of delay, the referee indicated that the situation had been camera-and-computer-determined to have been offside
(against Croatia) ............. Whuh? Hunh? Soccer is 90 minutes of non-stop action, uhhh. ok.

[BEGIN cut and pasted from that suggestion a few pages back]
topic #2) The many offside-determining cameras generate a graphic showing the attacker, the last non-goalie (usually) defender, and the restraining line showing that the attacker's eyelashes are offside.

This graphic has been televised typically after the raised hope, after the big cheer, and after the congratulations for the apparent scorer of the apparent goal.

Electrons move pretty fast. Digital images. Pixels detect that defender, those eyelashes, and that offside line really really quick. Why can't computerized command central IMMEDIATELY notify all the referees that it's offside?

Lung-burning sprints for naught could be avoided. In other words, have you ever heard the saying "Hope is the cruelest emotion" ?

topic 3) I PREDICT! there'll eventually be a return to refs making the calls. The delays to allow the fans to observe the ref's gait jogging over to the monitor and then jogging back from the monitor are not in the spirit of soccer.
[END of cut and paste]

Topic ZZZzzzzz:
IF my "territorial" way of breaking a tie (timing the time the ball is in each team's penalty area) has no support :(
Then, in the spirit of "90 minutes of non-stop action" I'd go with corner kicks.
raise the stakes by including throw-ins.
YES!
A corner kick might be 5 tie-breaker points and a throw-in would be 1 tie-breaker point

EDIT2ADD Congratulations to Croatia for advancing, AND EQUALLY!, for having an identifying *PATTERN*, in addition to an identifying color, ON THEIR JERSEYS. More nations oughtta rock an identifying pattern. Luv me some differentiation :)

*checkerboard*
Thanks and greetings from Croatia 😉

2 big games on today... USA V Netherlands and AUS V Argentina...

into the knock out games...

the biggest game the Oz lads have been in... I hope they bang a few goals in, to give Messi and his team something to think about..:)
I'll be giving the footballroos a cheer later on :p as it's good to see them making the knock outs.

Meanwhile, if you've 'BT sports' have a look at the live York City vs Wrexham game @ 12.30 GMT :p and it'll put you off the beautiful game for life :p

So the big question.... can the USA at least score ONE FREAKING GOAL??

I was stationed in Netherlands, our daughter was born there. So even if USA does lose (likely), I'll be glad to see the Dutch prevail!

LFG!!

My dog is seriously mad, because the USA match is just about to start and it is his walk time. I am an early Boomer, so soccer came late to me. I had an office in the UK and it was on TV 24/7. I was forced to learn the game and finally to enjoy it. I am happy subsequent generations have learned it in the USA. Go guys, you have earned this.

Just arrived back from UAE and the connecting flight was in Doha Qatar. Lots of staff and logistics people staying or visiting Abu Dhabi apparently. On the flight in it was fans from Mexico who started singing as we landed in Doha. On the way out it was lots of staff from the Brazil team going to Doha. They look tired.
It is crazy. Wall to wall coverage everywhere. Frickin’ 16hrs 45 minute flight back.
