Wee Wullie must have played for Rangers ....
Wee Wullie Henderson was my Rangers supporting father in law's hero.
I support the other team in Glasgow, so we've enjoyed 30+ years of taunting each other. All in good spirits though.

I actually get on better with him that with my own father and enjoy taking him to Scotland matches for a collective wallow in self-pity.

2 screens going here.... first time two games have started at the same time...
2 screens on here as well.
Not happy about the Wales score but happy that it's 1-nil to the Shermans.
Big CCV playing in defence for the US as well (plays for the club I support) so happy about that also.

All the last games of each group always start at the same time after this...

The "Disgrace of Gijón" is the name given to a 1982 FIFA World Cup football match played between West Germany and Austria at the El Molinón stadium in Gijón, Spain, on 25 June 1982. The match was the last game of the first-round Group 2, with Algeria and Chile having played the day before. With the outcome of that match already decided and known, a win by one or two goals for West Germany at the expense of Austria would result in both West Germany and Austria qualifying instead of Algeria, which had defeated West Germany in the first game. The Germans scored the only goal within the first 10 minutes of the match, which progressively deteriorated towards near standstill in the second half.[1] Spectators of the match accused both teams of fixing the outcome, although FIFA ruled that neither team had broken any rules.

I was watching TUN x FRA thinking France (hold the phone)

Oh. Australia won 2nd place in the group. so. it might be thought that France learned the Australia x Denmark result in real time, and therefore only scored when their scoring wouldn't hurt Tunisia's chances.

But Australia's victory sent Tunisia and Denmark home. France and Australia advance out of Group D.

Go Socceroos! Maybe some of the UK disdain for the term "soccer" will be diverted to the Southern Hemisphere.

Well...some genius a few pages back suggested a suggestion which, if enacted, would have avoided today's double-confusion and delay in the 1st half of CRO x BEL about the possible PK whistle
(against Belgium)
which, after minutes of delay, the referee indicated that the situation had been camera-and-computer-determined to have been offside
(against Croatia) ............. Whuh? Hunh? Soccer is 90 minutes of non-stop action, uhhh. ok.

[BEGIN cut and pasted from that suggestion a few pages back]
topic #2) The many offside-determining cameras generate a graphic showing the attacker, the last non-goalie (usually) defender, and the restraining line showing that the attacker's eyelashes are offside.

This graphic has been televised typically after the raised hope, after the big cheer, and after the congratulations for the apparent scorer of the apparent goal.

Electrons move pretty fast. Digital images. Pixels detect that defender, those eyelashes, and that offside line really really quick. Why can't computerized command central IMMEDIATELY notify all the referees that it's offside?

Lung-burning sprints for naught could be avoided. In other words, have you ever heard the saying "Hope is the cruelest emotion" ?

topic 3) I PREDICT! there'll eventually be a return to refs making the calls. The delays to allow the fans to observe the ref's gait jogging over to the monitor and then jogging back from the monitor are not in the spirit of soccer.
[END of cut and paste]

Topic ZZZzzzzz:
IF my "territorial" way of breaking a tie (timing the time the ball is in each team's penalty area) has no support :(
Then, in the spirit of "90 minutes of non-stop action" I'd go with corner kicks.
raise the stakes by including throw-ins.
YES!
A corner kick might be 5 tie-breaker points and a throw-in would be 1 tie-breaker point

EDIT2ADD Congratulations to Croatia for advancing, AND EQUALLY!, for having an identifying *PATTERN*, in addition to an identifying color, ON THEIR JERSEYS. More nations oughtta rock an identifying pattern. Luv me some differentiation :)
