I have to remember "caveat" is cav-ee-aaht rather than ca-veet.

Then you go to South Louisiana and nothing sounds like it is spelled.

Melacon = Mi' La 'Shawn Knew a Texan with that name and the Cajuns would tell him he wasn't Mel - a - con.

Lagniappe - Never ever would have gotten this one without a 3 year course in Cajun pronunciation.

When reading, I have trouble getting the stresses right on "superfluous." That "super" just jumps out at me and I automatically want to stress the first syllable. Fortunately, it doesn't come up often.

My son wrote a paper in high school that was so bad it hurt my brain having to read and spell check it. He was using texting lingo for a lot of the paper. I dragged his arse into the computer room and sat there for about a half hour with him fixing it.

Hadn't had a chance to check back.

Actually demonstrated my problem with the word. Correct spelling is as you noted above, without the space; my version is the "phonetic" way I pronounced the word until corrected.

Funny - the teacher didn't make me write it on the chalkboard 50 times.

    lascivious. There.

I'm Originally from New England. I still cringe a bit when my New Jersey born daughter in law attempts to pronounce the city names like Gloucester or Worcester.

A stranger came to a college apartment where I lived, and talked to me for a couple of hours about some sort of trouble he was in, which I could not understand.

The next day I asked a roommate where this kid was from and what language he spoke.
    He was British, speaking English.
    The only language I know.

OK, on topic, I can only spell Yngwie Malmsteen the way it sounds: Ingvay.
I had to google for the correct spelling, and I was so far off it didn't even come up at first.

Not that I hang with my posse and word up on Ingvay 'n' ****.

I wouldn't worry too much about that (maybe you didn't, burt anyway...)

Yngwie is a made up name, a version of the old swedish name Yngve.

On that note... the letter "W", what's up with that? Double you? You and your twin?
